I said the exact same thing after Chuck's post and was the reason I
thought you asked the question. Now if this was my Perko switch and my
boat, I would never use JiminFla post or even Chuck's post as the gospel.
I have seen too many incorrect advice given in rec.boats to follow any of
the recommendations. At this point, I would contact Perko directly and
get their recommendations and ask them if JiminTampa observations is
correct.

When JIMinFL was JIMinMA, those of us with gas I/O boats with mechanical
or electrical problems were like the people in the old investment firm
commercials (Smith Barney?) where, when Jim spoke, everybody listened.

He knows his stuff.

Smuthers needs to be heard on every subject. Let's see what his research
turns up.

JiminFl,
I did not criticize your advice what so ever. I had no idea if your
advice was correct or not. My point is that one should not follow
Usenet advice blindly.

Since you are knowledgeable, I am sure you have read your share of poor
advice, dangerous advice and costly advice given freely in rec.boats and
other NG.

If you took my comment as a slam against you, I apologize for my
miscommunication

Do you have a separate regulator?, because if I understood JiminFl
correctly, he would recommend you spend the extra $10.

You didn't understand. I made no recommendation. There is no place to hook
up the field switch to an alternator that has the regulator on the inside. I
did not disagree with Chuck. I was just expanding on what he said. If you
can use the feature, fine, It might save your alternator or your life
someday. If you can't use it, you are just wasting your money buying it.

JiminFl,
I guess I am having trouble understanding language today, because when
you said, If you have a separate regulator and you can use the feature
of the more expensive one it just might save your life, I interpreted
that as a recommendation to buy the more expensive one.

Richard,
The one thing that has always amazed me about Usenet is how a simple
question can get responses that vary all over the place. It can provide
some amazing long lived flamefests where people argue opposing theories
(IE Ficht, Bayliner as a bluewater boat, or who makes the best bilge
pump). I have found asking questions can be an effective way to point
one in the right direction, or at least to know what questions to ask,
but it is scary how dangerous some of the answers can be.

There are a few people who consistently provide knowledgeable answers
(IE Bill Grannis) but it can be difficult to separate the wheat from the
chafe. I had not seen (or remembered) JiminFl providing expertise in
mechanical and/or electrical systems, so I really had no way of telling
if he really was an expert. To me, the benefit of his post was the
knowledge to ask Perko the question "Do I need a separate regulator to
be able to use Product X".

Now, if I had known JiminFl was truly an expert in this field, the first
thing I would do is determine if I had a separate regulator. If I did,
I would absolutely buy the more expensive A/B switch.
