I am trying to purchase a water pump repair kit for an Evinrude 40hp,
2-stroke outboard engine (believed to be 1975). My problem is in
identifying the correct type. The engine model number is 405864C,
according to the plate - (serial number B 2852). Unfortunately these
numbers do not correspond to any publicised in the manual(s), neither
can dealers recognise these numbers. Can anyone help to identify the
exact part number I will need.?

those number don't jive with the factory's model year guide. According to
the Parts and Accessories Catalog that dealers receive every year, there are
about 15 listings for various models and years of a 40hp, and about 4
different types of impellers.

Remove the water pump from the motor and take it to a "savvy" dealer and
have them match it up. Parts people may not recognize the what the impeller
came from, but a long time OMC outboard mechanic may be able to help
identify it.

have any dealers within 100miles so I really need to get this by post -
hence the request for part no's.

Single carb - this is probably the one:

Impeller 377230

with a remote chance of: 378891

Dual carb - probably the 377230. Whole kit(w/o housing) would be 384956.

Do a google search & google image search on these and see if they match
what you have.

If you can post or find a similar pic of your lower unit, or the whole
motor, somewhere, I can narrow it down even more.

If you can attach a pic to a news group post, we've been using
alt.binaries.pictures.sports.ocean for posting binaries.

yahoo photos is also pretty easy to use, just be sure to make the photos
available to the public.

Model numbers can be tricky. Most of the manuals are produced for the
American market... yet Evinrudes sold in Canada may have a slightly
different model number.
My Evinrude 6 hp LS Yachtwin model number is CE6SLCDE
Closest I could find in the Ken Cooke data base is... E6SLCD
