I love it. Of course, the punishment will be thrown out by some activist
judge up the line who considers fake 'Mayday' calls a legitimate form of
expression.

The judge who sentenced this punishment has his head screwed on properly.

I don't agree. $53,233.80 is way too much of a penalty.... and
punishes at the expense of teaching.

I'd rather see the judge sentence this little idiot to XX amount of
time on board a boat with the Coasties. Let him see and learn first
hand about what they do and the ramifications of his actions....that
he endangered others lives and wasted taxpayer's money...why there are
laws against crying wolf.

The second part of his punishment would be to talk to school, church,
and civic groups about the USCG, what he did, and why it is wrong.

Then, maybe everybody would walk away with something. I can't see
taking a kid's college fund because he did something really stupid.
Sentencing him to 9.5 years labor (figuring taxes and wages at
$8.00/hr) is more than some people receive for premeditated violent
crimes.

Hell, I'd love to go spend x amount of time with the coasties! I think the
punishment is fine, especially letting them work off the fine - hopefully
by picking up dead fish and trash along the coastline.

Dead fish and trash along the coastline? Please, John. At the risk of
sounding like somebody from one of the central states, we ain't got no
stinking dead fish and trash washing ashore on the left coast. I mean,
heck, you think this is the Chesapeake, or something? :-)

Whoops. I keep forgetting that no one up there ever throws trash overboard!
In any case, I hope they find some ****ty job for those kids and work 'em
hard.

Folks out here are generally a bit more environmentally concerned, but
the actual reason you don't see trash is that our highly educated west
coast fish are constantly looking for something to read. It can be
anything- cigarette wrapper, beer bottle label,
you name it. Our HEF drag all that stuff right down off the surface and
thumb through it (more of them have thumbs since the last leakage up
the Columbia at the reactor) until it falls apart.
