They used that piece in the film Master and Commander.

Rousing stuff indeed. I remember the first time I heard that piece on
FM radio. Couldn't rest until I owned the CD.

I used to use it as one of my demo disks in the stereo biz many years ago.
Once, it brought a lady customer to tears. She used about 20 Kleenex, but
she bought the system. Nice one, too.

Goodbye speaker cones when the organ arrives, unless you've got a real
amplifier. :-)

Ain't it beautiful! *That* puts chills up and down my spine!

It's fun to play it for people who only listen to Beatles.
"Hey....duh....that's the song from 'Babe the Gallant Pig'!"

Now there's a bit of trivia I didn't know. Thanks!

You never saw the movie???

There are other versions around, but they suck. Our local orchestra, the
Rochester Philharmonic, tried it once, conducted by Zubin Mehta. Even HE
screwed it up by moving it along too fast.

Just buy it. The rest of the CD's interesting, too. Especially "Irish Tune
from County Derry", by Percy Grainger. Also known as "Danny Boy". Take away
the weepy drunken Irish singer and it's quite a piece.

Is that the name of the album? If not, what is it? I've got about 50 Telarcs.

On the edge of the case, Vaughan Williams is first in the list of composers.
On the front is a nice landscape of rolling green hills. The headline
selection is the one I mentioned, along with Samuel Barber's "Adagio for
Strings" a 3 others.

I think if you had it, you'd know. :-)

Never mind, it's on now. I love it. Actually, there are very few of the Telarc albums
I don't like, at least their early ones. I started buying them when they first put
out their infamous "1812 Overture" that few cartridges could handle.

Our local record store put all their Telarc CD's on sale, this was back in the early
80's, I think. They were on sale for half price, so I bought one of each (about 20).
The savings was enough to buy my first CD player, shortly after they came out. The
Telarcs were one of the few totally digital CD's available.

Got it on a Telarc, CD80042. It's Mazzel, with the Cleveland Orchestra. Mind blowing!

JohnH or Doug,
Since this is the theme music from "Master and Commander" it might qualify
for your two boating related posts. ; )

It's funny. We bought one of these fancy Bose 'Surround Sound' systems. My wife and I
argued about whether to get the unit with the 6 CD changer or the one without. I
didn't want the changer. Well, we ended up with the changer. Now it hardly gets used,
because it's such a pain in the butt to use.

I'll listen to "Victory at Sea", Telarc 80175. That ought to keep me in good stead
for a month.

How's it sound? When I was in the biz, Bose speakers were mainly attractive
to guys who wore backwards Caterpillar hats 24x7, and listened to nothing
but ZZ Top at full volume.

Pah - he stole the whole string choir concept from Elgar and did
nothing with it. By the time he wrote this, considered his
"masterpiece", he was already a hack.

Apparently, Ravel didn't think so.

Wait a minute....why am I discussing music with you??? You don't like bass,
the best instrument in the known universe. You're a mendicant!
