We will probably see more of this, as the sky marshal has less time to make a decision. If a guy says he has a bomb and reaches into his duffle, I say shoot fast and true. It may be a mistake, but I would rather the Suicide by Cop, than have the real bomb go off, because of a wait time. |

Yes, several of the fellow's survivors say he suffered from bipolar disorder, and there have been reports he was "off" his mood stabilizers. But we don't know the latter for fact, do we? You haven't a clue as to his state of mind before or during the shooting, and for you to claim the fellow wanted to die via cop suicide is absurd. Something happened, we don't know what for sure, beyond the shooting. Witnesses from the plane are contradicting the sky cops. We've had enough examples of cops killing by mistake. I am not saying this case is an example of that. But it could be, and that is what my post stated. Harry, no matter what, it's tragic. But, I think sky marshalls have to base fast decisions on outward appearances. The guy didn't stop, drop his belongings and show his hands when they told him to. IIRC, he was running into the building. What would you have done? Let him keep going toward a crowd of people just to see if he actually had a bomb or maybe a weapon? Let him detonate something on the walkway thing that's 20-50 feet from a wing filled with jet fuel? |

Harry,
His wife said he was Bi-Polar and had been off his meds, but it is possible that she lied. It is possible that it is a right wing conspiracy. "Harry Krause" wrote in message ... Let him detonate something on the walkway thing that's 20-50 feet from a wing filled with jet fuel? I'd like to know how anyone thought he could sneak a bomb on board a US-flag airliner on a flight boarding in south Florida. Remember, the guy had arrived earlier on a different flight from Quito, Ecuador. Ecuador. As in heavy-duty carry on bag examination for drugs. The last time I flew, every passenger and every passenger's luggage was carefully scrutinized. Everyone's shoes were examined. Every piece of carry-on luggage was viewed, and all bags were opened. My wife flies around the country frequently, and she and everyone else on every flight is subjected to the same sorts of searches. So this fellow gets on a plane at a major US airport, one known to be used by drug carriers, after going through security, and the sky marshals think they hear him say he has a bomb, and as he runs off the plane onto the jetway, they fire five shots at him? What would they do if when confronted another guy pulls out his wallet? Will they shoot him, too? That happened, you know. In NYC. Well, I am sure there will be an investigation. I hope it is an honest one. And in October, when we flew SFO to Rome, Italy via Cincinnati, I reached into the carryon backpack when we having lunch in Cincinnati, inside the security area, and I found the 4" folding knife that lives in the pack for picnics. Since we did not have to exit the security area, I finished the flight to Rome with a 4" knife aboard. And you may not get aboard with drugs, but bombs may not be as highly search for. And when we flew out of Quito this year, there was no major search of carryon for drugs. Was no more search than any US airport, maybe less. Run the carryon through the x-ray machine. |

Then when someone says, "I have a bomb in here" and reaches into the bag, the marshall could take out your post and read it before doing anything. Sounds as good as any plan Kerry has come up with for solving the world's problems. -- John H MERRY CHRISTMAS!
