Looking for rack storage around NYC
Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I recently
relocated to New York City and am looking for a marina, preferably on the Long Island Sound, that has a dry rack storage facility where I can put a 28' powerboat. If possible, I'd like the marina to be within an hour of the City. If anyone can offer any information, I'd appreciate it. |

Looking for rack storage around NYC
Indoor storage - I had my boat in a high and dry marina in Freeport at
Al Grovers (516-546-8880). Not the sound though. It's on the south shore which I think is nicer than the sound anyways. After 12 years, my boat still looked new - no bottom painting, no sun faded gelcoat and canvas, no water-line stains, no electrolisys, no annual zincs replacements, no galvanic corrosion, no storm damage, no stolen stuff, no need to remove electronics or tackle. I dealt with the owner's son, Dante, who manages the marina. They treated my boat like it was their own. If I still lived in NY, I would still be there. One price stores your boat for 12 months Indoors! It was cheaper than a conventional marina. No mandatory winterization or painting like some marinas. Hotel next door. Long Island's best seafood restaurants nearby. Easy access from the Meadowbrook Parkway. Blue Water Yacht Club in Merrick - I've never seen boats that big in their racks. Indoor Storage. I didn't like their mandatory winterization and bottom painting policy. There are also a few in Seaford, but they're outdoors and further away. John |

John I agree with everything you've said, especially the nearby seafood. But, more to the OP's requirements, what about City Island? Is that marina territory, or not a place you'd want to park your boat unless you had private security guards? (I haven't been there in 25 years). |

I went to City Island a few years ago. I hadn't been there in many
years. We used to eat at a restaurant called Ann's Harbor. The food in City Island is excellent too. The area has changed a lot. If indoor storage could be found, it might be ok. I don't know if I would be comfortable leaving my boat there outdoors. If the original poster lives in the Bronx, it might be worth a look. He may also try a little further north, either in Westchester or Connecticut. But, if he lives in Queens or Brooklyn, he has to pay a toll to cross the Triboro, Throgs Neck, or the Whitestone Bridges to get to the Bronx. If you are in Queens, check out the Howard Beach area. If you are in Brooklyn, check out the Sheepshead Bay area. I do not know if rack storage is available there. I just like the Jones Beach area much better. The atmosphere of the Nautical Mile in Freeport also attracted me. I live in the Soutwest now. When I head back to NY, I still go to Freeport for fish. John John |

Looking for rack storage?
Appreciate all of the input, I'll definitely look into the places
mentioned. I actually live on the upper east side of Manhattan and had the chance to get out to City Island earlier this year. I spent a day walking around the island trying to get a feel for it, didn't seem like a bad place. I noticed that Minneford Marina had outdoor racks for boats but I'm not sure what sizes they can handle. However, it did seem like the marina had lots of boater activity and decent security. I didn't see any other racks on City Island. I'm open to both indoor and outdoor rack storage so if anyone thinks of anywhere else, please let me know. |

Even with the best security, I'd still remove electronics mounted on brackets and stash it somewhere. Thieves manage to get around the most well designed car alarms, so a boat is easy pickins. |

Since you're on the upper east side, check out the World's Fair Marina.
I'm not sure if it's still called that. It's the marina on the Grand Central Parkway, just east of LaGuardia Airport. It's 5 minutes past the Triboro Bridge. If you choose City Island in the Bronx, you can head uptown and cross one of the free bridges (3rd Avenue, Willis Avenue). You could always stay in Manhattan. The 79th Street Pier charges about $95 per foot for year round storage. There are also marinas in Jersey (Hoboken and Jersey City) and in Westchester (New Rochelle). I don't know which of these may have rack storage. |
