Man killed in boating accident
LAKE VIEW, Iowa (AP) -- A man was killed after he was cut by a boat propellor on a northwest Iowa lake. Wesley Eugene Head, 22, of Dow City, was standing at the back of a boat on Black Hawk Lake Friday evening when he lost his balance as the boat shifted in gear, said officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. He was cut on the leg by the propellor, the DNR said. People at the scene tried to resuscitate Head, who was taken by helicopter to Loring Hospital in Sac City, where he later died. The investigation was continuing. |

Some idiot is going to sue outboard and stern drive manufacturers and require prop guards on all props...which should really screw up already poor fuel economy on boats. |

I hope they not only force prop guards, but also insist you keep on board
all necessary equipment to clean up all bodily fluid spilt by a prop cut. ; ) "NOYB" wrote in message k.net... "Real Name" wrote in message ... Would it really screw up fuel economy ? If anything, I would think it would make it more like a jet drive, wouldn't it ? |

Running the prop within a circular frame directs more of the thrust parallel to the keel and there is less energy wasted pushing water "sideways". This should have a positive effect on fuel economy and range Side benefit, (awful pun) could be some protection for swimmers, manatees, etc. I would think that most prop-related deaths and injuries involve contact with the edge of the blades rather than contact with the face or hub of the prop. We don't get a lot of prop injuries in the Pac NW. 52-degree water tends to discourage swimmers. :-) |

If a swimmer gets into the nozzle, it is going to make sure that he is sliced and diced into little pieces. They can not get out to the side and get a glancing blow, all the force will be directed through the nozzle. |

I would think that they could make something with just a simple "X" grate over it as to not impede water flow. |
