Choose a OB for 18' jon
The message was directed to "New to Boating". A little defensive, Harry?

Cruising at moderate speeds, around 15mph is the goal. Is this underpowered @ 25-30 hp? Thanks! Is there anyway you can get a demo ride on a boat equipped with one of hte engines you are considering? I think you're going to be disappointed with the "efficient" cruise speed. Ya think? Naw, the little outboard bracket on my Parker is for an 8 or 10 hp jobbie. How about your boat, Dan?Can he take it out for a trial? |

That's what the dealer who sold Mercury said... He suggested a 40 hp as a minimum. He really thought I should get a console for the boat and put on a much bigger 4 cylinder engine. That would blow my budget! Here's the boat's specs... MV1872 Specifications Overall Length: 18 ft. Beam: 95 in. Bottom Width: 72 in. Side Depth: 28 in. Gauge: .125 in. Rating: 80/130 hp Weight Cap: 2075 lbs. Persons Cap: 12/1650 lbs. Approximate Weight: 750 lbs. Transom Height: 20 in. http://seaark.com/site/htmlos/02506....42758012687376 It was sold in a foreclosure auction with a very basic single axle trailer (13" wheels) for $1500 2 weeks ago. It is used (2001) but in excellent shape. No motor. New, I estimate the boat and trailer to be about $5000, so I think I did OK so far. It barely got to 12mph and one day when we were trying to outrun a storm, I realized why an underpowered boat just plain sucks. The next weekend when I was trying to actually get somewhere I became so frustrated I literally trailered it, the engine is in the basement. Scotty |

I called about getting a demo to the Mercury dealer. He said no demos of
new motors (because then they'd be used motors) but he would demo used motors. He has a 1998 Mercury 2 stroke electric start 40 hp that he'd sell for $1000. I don't think I want a 2 stroke, as the pollution bothers me. I bet I could get him down to $950. When I visited him I got the impression business was slow. It also seems that 2/3's his inventory is used, and most of the used stuff isn't a year or two old, more like 6-10 years old. It is a 40 hp. I'm sure it will not perform as a 40 hp 4 stroke, but at least I'll be in the ballpark. Dan Krueger wrote: Maybe you can take this a step further and ask them to demo one or two on *your* boat. Actually it will perform better than the 4 stroke since it is lighter and
has better acceleration. As said before, I don't believe you will be happy w/ a 40. You never want to run the engine at wide open for long periods of time. Poor fuel economy and very hard on the engine. -- Tony my boats at http://t.thomas.home.mchsi.com "New to Boating" wrote in message ... I called about getting a demo to the Mercury dealer. I figured as much. We have a friend who repowered a 30' 1991 Suntracker
Party Hut pontoon boat this spring. This thing had a 75 hp 3 cylinder Mercury 2 stroke of the same vintage, it moved OK, but not great. He wants to sell me the 75hp for $1200, but it is too loud for me. Now it has a 115hp 4 cylinder 4 stroke Mercury. (My friend says 2004 is the last year for his Party Hut... next year he'll get a 32' Party Cruiser, which weighs about 1000 lbs more and needs the 115hp.) My friend says with the new motor they can go much faster, if they choose, it burns about the same amount of fuel, and now you don't have to shout to hear each other when the motor is running. I rode with them a few times last year. What a racket from that motor... If the 40 hp 2 stroke is half as loud, I'd still hate it, because I'll be sitting right next to it. At least on the Party Hut you could get some distance from the motor. I think the 115 hp is the maximum for his boat. My boat is now at the dealer. They are going to put the motor on tomorrow. I'm going to take it for a little run after work. If the price is right, maybe I'll take the 2 stroke and use it for a year or two. I believe it is sort of a waste of money, but then again I'm cheap.
