Hand tiller outboards-Which would you choose?
Yamaha/Mercury 30 hp 747cc 3 cyl. $3500 Yamaha 25hp 498cc 2 cyl. hi-thrust model $3200 Suzuki/Johnson 25 hp or 30 hp 597cc 3 cyl. $3100 or $3500 Nissan 25hp or 30 hp 492cc $2800 or $3000 Honda 25 hp or 30 hp 552cc 2 cyl.$3500 or $3800 Going on a 18' Sea Ark MV1872 heavy duty (.125 aluminum) "super" jon boat (80 hp max?) fuel efficiency most important. Cruising at moderate speeds, around 15mph is the goal. Is this underpowered @ 25-30 hp? Thanks! |

Not an expert on Jon boats, but my brother's which is an 18' or 19'
with an older 25hp Merc does around 28mph if memory serves me. I don't know how 'heavy' your heavy duty Jon is, but would not think you will have a problem doing 15mph with any of the motors you listed. Why not try deciding which one you'd like and put it on the dealer to guarantee the performance you're looking for. Seems to me you're not asking for a lot and a dealer should be able to figure if this is enough and at least guarantee that much performence. Just a thought. -Jim New to Boating wrote: Hand tiller outboards-Which would you choose? Rule of thumb if a boat is rated for 80hp then take 80percent of that
number and that would be the average for your boat, and it looks like a 60 to 65hp would be the ticket "Jim" wrote in message ... Joseph,
I'm familiar with that rule of thumb, but, a) I personally can't imagine using a tiller motor of that size, and b) now that I see he's posted the specs on the boat, it's much bigger overall than I was imagining. -Jim Joseph Stachyra wrote: Rule of thumb if a boat is rated for 80hp then take 80percent of that number and that would be the average for your boat, and it looks like a 60 to 65hp would be the ticket |

I have seen 100 HP Mariner tiller steers on two different boats now. One was a
large jon "work" boat on the Mississippi River. The other was a Lund (or maybe a Sylvan) walleye boat on the Illinois River. I have personally operated my friend's 60 HP tiller and there was very little pull from the prop when accelerating. It had decent instrumentation - internal speedo, tach, temp, and voltage that were mounted on the side of the boat. That's what the dealer who sold Mercury said... He suggested a 40 hp as
a minimum. He really thought I should get a console for the boat and put on a much bigger 4 cylinder engine. That would blow my budget! Here's the boat's specs... MV1872 Specifications Overall Length: 18 ft. Beam: 95 in. Bottom Width: 72 in. Side Depth: 28 in. Gauge: .125 in. Rating: 80/130 hp Weight Cap: 2075 lbs. Persons Cap: 12/1650 lbs. Approximate Weight: 750 lbs. Transom Height: 20 in. http://seaark.com/site/htmlos/02506....42758012687376 It was sold in a foreclosure auction with a very basic single axle trailer (13" wheels) for $1500 2 weeks ago. It is used (2001) but in excellent shape. No motor. New, I estimate the boat and trailer to be about $5000, so I think I did OK so far. It barely got to 12mph and one day when we were trying to outrun a storm, I realized why an underpowered boat just plain sucks. The next weekend when I was trying to actually get somewhere I became so frustrated I literally trailered it, the engine is in the basement. Scotty |

I think you're going to be disappointed with the "efficient" cruise speed. |

Maybe you can take this a step further and ask them to demo one or two on *your*
boat. The dealer will probably have to be on the water for them to accommodate you. Dan Harry Krause wrote: New to Boating wrote: Hand tiller outboards-Which would you choose?
