Default Choose a OB for 18' jon

Hand tiller outboards-Which would you choose?

Yamaha/Mercury 30 hp 747cc 3 cyl. $3500
Yamaha 25hp 498cc 2 cyl. hi-thrust model $3200

Suzuki/Johnson 25 hp or 30 hp 597cc 3 cyl. $2700 or $3500

Nissan 25hp or 30 hp 492cc $2800 or $3000

Honda 25 hp or 30 hp 552cc 2 cyl.$3500 or $3800

Going on a 18' Sea Ark MV1872 heavy duty (.125 aluminum) "super" jon
boat (80 hp max?)
fuel efficiency most important. Cruising at moderate speeds, around
15mph is the goal.
Is this underpowered @ 25-30 hp?
Thanks!

That 25hp was actually quoted as $3100, sorry for the typo.

I too bought a 17 Lowe roughneck which is a .125 welded boat with a 97/35hp
evinrude not nearly enough motor, I now have a 60hp Johnson. In my opinion
you are wasting your time, the least I think you will nee is a 40hp several
of my friends have 40hp 4cy but they are on a regular ribbed jon boat. The
welded boats are heavy

Hello 'New to Boating',

I have heard people talk about 80% of max HP to be a safe outboard size.
That would be 64hp in this case.

I think I would put a 40hp Yamaha tiller on that boat for a minimum. A 60hp
would be nice too.

Because Yamaha sells so many large tiller outboard motors in 'third world
countries' they seem to have one of the most well designed tiller
assemblies.

It is rated for 80hp tiller and 130hp remote steering.

The bare hull weighs 750# so it will take some HP just to get it on plane.

It will carry over 2000# max weight - gear/people/motor/fuel.

This is a pretty big heavy duty Jon boat - 18' long with a 95" beam.

HI
I have a 16'6" v bottom crestliner with a 25hp tiller ob on it. It
weighs 750# empty. With 2 200lb adults, 2 9 year old children, 2 6 gal
gas tanks, Anchor, coolers, fishing stuff etc… it will do 20mph with a
11" inch prop. More than enough for where I fish. By myself with one
tank and the extra chairs removed and a 13" inch prop it will do 26mph
on a good day. Just to give you an idea on speed.
I have been looking to replace my motor with this one though for more
speed. http://www.smalloutboards.com/j5598.htm
