I am relatively new to boating and was just looking for information. If I'm just drifting with the wind/tide, generally I turn it off - I prefer long drifts anyway rather than short drifts. I like to set up so any structure usually results in a reasonably straight line. However, if I'm in a close quarters, high current area, or the wind is acting up, then I leave the engine running - play it safe. I also leave it running if there is a lot of boat traffic - in particular sail boats. A lot of these dumbasses would just as soon run you over as have to move the wheel a quarter turn to avoid a collision. And before any sailors protest, I'm talking about a specific group of dumbasses infesting Narragansett Bay. It's been my experience that most of the people in this particular newsgroup know what they are talking about. Later, Tom |
