I was looking around at some of the engine maker websites and stumbled
across the new Mercury Verado supercharged, 4-stroke, big outboards with their sequential, multi-port fuel injection and miles of other complexities to ensure you have zero chance of getting the damned thing running if it quits on the river, 35 miles from home. One of the REQUIREMENTS of this ultra-sophisticated piece of American ingenuity is its NMMA-certified FCW SAE 25W-40 motor oil. Of COURSE we couldn't just have a super-sophisticated new outboard motor that ran on just any old 4-stroke oil, like SAE SJ from Autozone. Oh, NO! We have to invent a whole new line of ultra-profitable, very limited availability motor oils you can only get at....guess where.....Your MERCURY dealer! Federal law provides that if they specify a BRAND of motor oil, they have to GIVE it to you for the life of the engine..... So, through the loophole, we invent a new motor oil of stupid miltiple viscosity and threaten to void your warranty, I'm sure, if you use SJ 15W-40 from Autozone. Don't suppose I'll be buying a Verado outboard.....or a Ficht....or an OptiMax....any time soon. Stupid manufacturers still haven't learned their lessons...... Search Google for "NMMA-certified FCW SAE 25W-40" and look at all 4 hits it gets on the whole internet.....all Mercury, of course. Wanna bet it's NOT $6/gallon? The damned thing holds EIGHT quarts of it! |

My Suzuki recommends good ol' 10W-40. I just changed my oil and replaced it
with Semi-synthetic. "Larry W4CSC" wrote in message ... Larry,
Is it possible an additive or a synthetic oil could improve the lubrication properties of oil? I know there are many products that are "snake oil" (and I am guilty of buying my fair share) but I would think some would be able to give your basic oil improved properties. Speaking of "snake oil" how many people fell for the Teflon additives, such as Slick 50. My complaint was not that it was useless, but that it actually caused accelerated wear on engines. I guess my biggest complaint is I actually fell for it. "Larry W4CSC" wrote in message ... "Billgran" wrote in : Go to a library or find a a back issue of the March 2004 Trailer Boats Magazine. ~~ snippage ~~ Is it possible an additive or a synthetic oil could improve the lubrication properties of oil? I didn't believe it, but it does. I used TCW-3 spec Pennzoil on my Ranger (which, according to the warranty specs is all that is required) and the plugs carboned up like you wouldn't believe. The first year I owned it, I had a decrease in performance due to carboned plugs. When I pulled them just to check, I was blowen away by the sheer amount of carbon. I switched to FICHT oil and problem solved. So the evidence is yes, there are additives in FICHT oil and I assume other manufacturer's oil, that are specific to their machine's requirements. What scam? It's the same as the Metz antenna scam - only different. :) Later, Tom |
