Default Trailer bearing question

I recently had one of the wheels on my trailer overheat after only about 4
miles of driving. As it turns out the one of the bearings has totally
disintegrated and a piece of the drum had broken off. I replace the drum
and the bearings.

Inspection of the spindle revealed that it was not bent but it did have a
few gouges on it. The new bearings and the new drum all fit on perfectly
and after about 25 miles of towing (with the boat on the trailer), the hub
was just barely warm.

My question is . . . are the gouges in the spindle going to cause a problem
or is it okay? I'm thinking that since the drum turns on the bearings and
not the spindle, it should be no problem but I want to be sure.

What do you all think?

I think you should monitor it for a while but it will prolly be OK. Keep
the grease in there.

As long as the gouges are not along where the bearing seals are
located allowing the grease to escape, then you should be all set.
The load being carried is spreard across the spindle, so a minor gouge
isn't much of a problem. Take a piece of emory cloth and just smooth
the area around the gouges down so there aren't any minor hills or
sharp edges to cause uneven wear. Keep them greased and check often
until you are comfortable with the situation.

Definitely keep an eye on it, but it's probably o.k. The next time
you check the temperature, be sure to compare both sides of the
trailer. If the bearings on both sides feel the same, it's probably
normal.

Be sure to recheck the grease on the new bearing. You may work some
air out of the hub and be able to get more grease in there after you
drive it a bit.

Been there. Five+ years and 35000 miles later, AOK. But keep an eye on it.
You should check hub temps every time you stop. If you can't keep your finger
on it, you got a problem.

Did you replace the bearings on the other wheel(s)? I would. Or at least pull it apart and have
a look.

I presume by "drum" you mean "outer race". The bearing and outer
race should always be replaced together. You did that, but there's
an implication that it would be OK to do just one.

And you obviously carry a spare bearing, seal and race with a clean rag, and
small tool box sufficient to do a roadside job....Correct? (Nod yes) If not,
you could be that poor guy on the side of the road looking for a parts store
on a Sunday evening. JMTCW...

I saw some complete assembled hub kits at Wallyworld. Priced at about $35 US
or $198 Canadian
