LOL. Out here in the East we figure it's a fair trade to have more ice
and
snow but less yuppie snots! ;-D

OK, that accounts for the ice and snow. Now what about the mosquitoes,
black flys, noseeums, etc? What are you trading those for?

At least in my neck of the woods we don't get black flys or noseeums and the
mosquitoe season is pretty light and only during the warm month. That's an
easy trade for hour long 10 mile commutes.

We have 4 real seasons.

There's also the real estate market. Last fall my mother-n-father in law
bought a house about 10 minutes from "downtown" Ithaca. It's a nice two
level 3br, 2ba house with a huge two car garage on 25 wooded acres. They
paid less than $200K for it.

For paddling there's a 40 mile long lake within walking distance (the best
route is through one of the gorges which has a couple of 50' water falls).
If I wanted to I could launch onto the lake, paddle north to the Seneca
river, make my way to the Erie canal and then either go south down the
Hudson river to the ocean or north through Lake Champlain to the St Lawrence
river and out to the ocean. It's about a 5 hour drive to the ocean
otherwise (about what I used to do to go skiing when I lived on the west
coast). During the winter, a flight to Florida or other southern states
for some warm water winter paddling takes only a few hours and is typically
under $300. Otherwise there's always pool sessions, or building a new boat
in my basement.

Also being on the east coast there are frequently some good airfares to
Europe. A couple of months ago I saw a r/t fare to London for just over
$200.
