Default how much rain can she hold before she sinks?

Hey, I have a Cal-25 at anchorage and it's been too blustery to check on
her. She not at all weatherproof and last time these storms came through
Calif. her entire bilge was full of water. Took 20 minutes to pump out.
How much water can she hold before sinking to the bottom?

I think I might have figured this one out. Since she's sitting in salt
water, which is more dense than rain (fresh) water, it seems she could take
on rain and still float until the ocean acutally came in over the gunwales.
Since anything that's less dense than a liquid will float on that liquid,
and the only new mass that's being added is rainwater, which is less dense
than ocean water, the boat should remain afloat. (Until I board her to bail
her out!)

Is this right?

My Sandpiper 565 has enough flotation foam to keet it afloat...even when
completely swamped and with a family of four aboard......or so they claim.

no automatic bilge pump. Just a manual.

Unfortunately, I remember once when I had my 27 ft Catalina up for sale.
The switches were wired in such a way that it was possible to shut off the
bilge pump circuit from the inner-cabin.

I TOLD the sales-rep to be certain no one ever touched that switch.... ha!..
Came back after a very serious rainstorm and I found about a foot and a half
of water inside of the cabin. It was caused by the switch that was turned
off. Stupid me, I should have re-wired the switch when I bought her...

Anyhow.. from the outside.....you couldn't tell the boat had ANY water in
her even with 18 inches of water over the bilge. Lots of floating
capacity, not much weight...However, sal****er in contact with ANYTHING
metal is not a good thing.

Where in the world is rainwater salty?

Of course, you are correct...the water that got in that time was rainwater
and IT wasn't salty.

I guess I was thinking about the times that I have had sal****er splash in
and it proceeded to rust everything. No connection between the two except
my foggy brain this morning. Thanks for pointing it out. RichG TX

Not a thing. I had a bronze thru-hull corrode through due to an
electrolysis problem. What a mess... ended up rewiring the whole
boat. Probably ended up being a good thing overall, as I got rid of a
few decades worth of crufty wiring, but not the way I wanted to spend
several weeks in the summer boating season.
