Thanks for the information. It seems i may have to take the lower unit off
and take it to a boat shop and have it checked. I don't really have a way of pumping the pressure up and holding it. I am getting a manual from the library this week. Thanks again for the help....Tom wrote in message ... "tcoop" wrote in message ... Do i have to take the lower end off of the motor, or can i pull the motor someplace and have it pressure tested? I wonder if i fill it up with new gear oil could i take it for a quick spin? I have done some work on the boat and want to see if everything is working properly before I tear into something else? I was hoping the oil seal would be a simple matter of taking out the 2 bolts and pressing the oil seals off and the new seals on. Thanks for the help again....Tom http://www.sterndrive.info/id13.html See above^ Here is the basic layout for a lower unit on an outboard or a stern drive. Almost the same configuration. Look for numbers 35 and 36 (there is two of them there). You want the top one, the filler hole. You put the pump in the top filler hole and pressure test to about 12 PSI approximately, or in the link it says 7 to 10 PSI for that model. They mention leaving it pressurized for 2 hours or over night. I have never done that. But this pressure test will show where the leak(s) are coming from. It's a great way to check your lower unit, and it will pinpoint where your leak(s) are. Often to get a correct diagnoses, you have to remove the gear case to check the other seals under the water pump. You could have more than one area at fault. Also, a good service manual helps a lot. If anything, it will let you know what you may be up against. Hope this helps a bit. "tcoop" wrote in message ... I have a 40 hp Force engine and it is leaking oil from between the prop and carrier bearing housing assembly http://coopscorner.com/takealook/carrier_assembly.htm Can somone give me some hints on getting the carrier assembly off of the lower gear caseing? Does it have little pins that it slides onto, does it screw on, do i need a fancy wheel puller or do i need a big hammer and a block of wood? I have the 2 new oil seals, but I am wondering if there is an O ring that is holding the carrier in place? Thanks in advance for the help, it is very much appreciated....tom |
