40hp Force carrier bearing assembly

I have a 40 hp Force engine and it is leaking oil from between the prop and
carrier bearing housing assembly
http://coopscorner.com/takealook/carrier_assembly.htm

Can somone give me some hints on getting the carrier assembly off of the
lower gear caseing? Does it have little pins that it slides onto, does it
screw on, do i need a fancy wheel puller or do i need a big hammer and a
block of wood?

I have the 2 new oil seals, but I am wondering if there is an O ring that is
holding the carrier in place?

Thanks in advance for the help, it is very much appreciated....tom

Why didn't you remove the prop for the picture, much less for your own
satisfaction?

Pressure test the lower unit before tearing in to it. The oil in the
pic could be 2-stroke drool, from the exhaust housing, as it's not clear
in the picture.

If I were you, I'd get a Selock manual - however, just a guess, the
bearing is press fitted on the prop shaft. That requires some
patience if you don't have a hydraulic press.

Here is a picture of the oil that drained out of the gear box.
http://coopscorner.com/takealook/gear_oil.htm

This is a recent picture
http://coopscorner.com/takealook/carrier_assembly.htm

This is a picture from a few months ago. This looks like maybe 2 cycle oil
where as the other looks like it has water mixed with it.
http://coopscorner.com/takealook/older_pic.htm

The pan I drained it into wasn't as clean as it could have been but does
the color of the oil look like it has oil in it? I can't tell if it does,
but it does not look like it does other than the color.

Thanks again for all the help.
Tom

Like someone else mentioned, you should pressure test that gear case. But
from the photos, it does look like gear oil, rather than 2 stroke exhaust
drip. A pressure test will pinpoint the leak, as you could have several
areas that are at fault. If you have to remove the gear case, then inspect
your impeller and water pump housing as well.

A good service manual will walk you through the steps and save you hours of
guess work and it should describe the tools you will need to do the
servicing and repairs.

Do i have to take the lower end off of the motor, or can i pull the motor
someplace and have it pressure tested?
I wonder if i fill it up with new gear oil could i take it for a quick spin?
I have done some work on the boat and want to see if everything is working
properly before I tear into something else? I was hoping the oil seal would
be a simple matter of taking out the 2 bolts and pressing the oil seals off
and the new seals on.
Thanks for the help again....Tom

Here is the basic layout for a lower unit on an outboard or a stern drive.
Almost the same configuration. Look for numbers 35 and 36 (there is two of
them there). You want the top one, the filler hole. You put the pump in the
top filler hole and pressure test to about 12 PSI approximately, or in the
link it says 7 to 10 PSI for that model.

They mention leaving it pressurized for 2 hours or over night. I have never
done that. But this pressure test will show where the leak(s) are coming
from. It's a great way to check your lower unit, and it will pinpoint where
your leak(s) are. Often to get a correct diagnoses, you have to remove the
gear case to check the other seals under the water pump. You could have more
than one area at fault. Also, a good service manual helps a lot. If
anything, it will let you know what you may be up against.

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks for the information. It seems i may have to take the lower unit off
and take it to a boat shop and have it checked. I don't really have a way of
pumping the pressure up and holding it. I am getting a manual from the
library this week.
Thanks again for the help....Tom
