As to it's political significance, I'm pretty sure it goes along the lines of red is a male dominate color (as in fire, blood, hunting, etc.) and blue is a feminine color (as in the color of depth for instance and in Egyptology, the color most associated with Amun and in Christian doctrine, St. Mary). Which, if broken down, red is a more aggressive color which can be viewed as a negative and blue is a more positive color which can be viewed as a positive.
