I have a '93 4.3 Alfa one.

When motor is idling I hear a "roar" no clicking, or knocking. could
this be the universal joints going bad?
comments/opinion?

More likely internal outdrive bearings. Have you changed/checked the lube
lately of your Alpha One?

I'd expect a bad u-joint to be more of a pop or clunk. Bearings roar. My
moderately bad gimbal bearing produced sort of a low rumble, that I didn't
really notice until it wasn't there any more after the replacement.

Is the drive tilted down or up? Is it straight ahead or to one side or
the other? If the drive is tilted up, you will get some sort of
chatter. If the noise increases significantly when the drive is turned
to either side, the U-Joints may be wearing out.

A constant groaning or roaring noise when the drive is level and
straight is more likely to be the gimbal bearing. Try shooting some
lube into the zerk fitting on the lower right side of the drive's
transom plate while the engine is running and see if it "quiets" the
noise. If it does, then you should probably consider bearing
replacement.
