This really does show the insanity of the whole thing. I doubt any of
these things would even filter out sawdust and we are expecting it to
stop a virus that is 0.15 microns. If you are worried about sunburn on
your nose it might be a thing but otherwise, it is only handy for
criminals.

Obviously, you still don't understand the purpose of wearing a mask.

It is *not* to filter a 0.15 micron virus.Â* A standard HEPA filter
won't even do that.

The purpose of wearing a mask is to reduce the "spread" of
droplets from a cough or sneeze to reduce the chances of others
becoming infected.

The flaw is the "droplets" are very small too or they would not hang
in the air. There is no reason to believe a bandanna would stop them.
In fact it could actually collect them while you are breathing and be
the chamber of the gun when you sneeze.

I have an experiment I am thinking of doing. Take a couple layers of T
shirt. Mist some red food coloring on one side enough to simulate
breathing through it during an hour of shopping. Then pop a balloon
held against that side, simulating a sneeze and see how far the red
spray goes through the other side.

Anyone have a prediction?

I'll be content with believing the two university studies
I sent you links to that used complex computer modeling to demonstrates
that a mask reduces how far those droplets go and spread.

BTW Greg .... After reading your "experiment", I realized that again
you don't seem to grasp the function or purpose of a mask.

Of course some of your red food coloring is going to go through
to the outside of the layers of shirt. A fabric mask isn't going to
prevent a covid-19 molecule from going through the mask either.

The purpose .... again and again .... of a mask is to reduce
how FAR those moisture droplets, possibly containing the covid-19
virus TRAVEL or from SPREADING to others around you.

It was (and is still recommended) that six feet was enough to
prevent the droplets from affecting anyone however the computer
models I linked to proved otherwise.

Your test is isn't valid anyway. A valid test would compare
how far the red food coloring goes with and then without
a mask. To test without a mask, you'd have to take a mouthful
of red food coloring then have someone tickle your nose until
you sneezed and then see who gets wet. :-)

The question is not how far, it is how many. If you are coughing on
the apples or the counter top, you have spread the infection. It is
really the very tiny ones that can hang in the air and I doubt your
bandanna is stopping many of them.

You probably know more about aerosols than I do. How big is a droplet
that can ride on air? (I suppose I could google it). My guess is we
are talking about microns tho.

Some are lighter than air and can rise which further complicates the
spread.

I guess we have kicked the crap out of this horse. You think a mask is
worthless. Most of the rest of the world including docs and infectious
disease experts think otherwise.

So, don't wear a mask. Don't complain about your $300 fine though
if caught in MA not wearing one in close proximity to other people.

Go back to your mouthfull of food coloring.

I was trying to give a better real world test.

It'll be nice when and if there are effective vaccines. I still think we
are a long way away from that, assuming the usual sort of testing once
some real possibilities are found.

They are thinking the actual trials will be in the general population.
It is all part of that "Do Something Now" mantra you have been
chanting.

Much as I'd like to see those vaccine trials be successful, I'm not
sure I'd want any friends or family members in the first round of
testing.

I wonder if you get a T shirt that says "I'm OK" so nobody hassles me
about that stupid mask. If so I would give it a try.

Have you tried one of those fishing hoods that covers your nose and
mouth? I have't but I'm thinking about it. They've got to be more
comfortable than an N95 mask.

I wore one today. Mostly to keep the sun off my face. Just finishing
flourouracil skin treatment. Mine does not fit sung over the mouth and
nose. May just be old.

It is *not* to filter a 0.15 micron virus. A standard HEPA filter
won't even do that.

The purpose of wearing a mask is to reduce the "spread" of
droplets from a cough or sneeze to reduce the chances of others
becoming infected.

The flaw is the "droplets" are very small too or they would not hang
in the air. There is no reason to believe a bandanna would stop them.

Food coloring in the mouth would be 'real world' enough.

Maybe it is just the Barbarosa aspect of it that bothers me. I am
scary enough these days without "blood" dripping down my chin.

So mix a drop of red with a few drops of yellow. That'd be liveable.
