Default transom tie-downs

Are the automatic retracting tie-downs the best thing since sliced bread, or
should I stick to the old style? What are everyone's opinions?

I think they are slick. Mine are fine after two years, although i never
actually ratchet them down tight. I just hang them on there. They do
nothing anyway.

I don't know how big your boat is, but I have seen boats over 23 feet long
bounce and shift at the rear of the trailer on the highway.

When I picked up my boat, I asked where the transom straps were. They told me
they weren't included so my first stop was Outdoor World down the road for a
$15.00 investment. Any method of tying down the transom should be a
requirement. Maybe the boat won't fall off of the trailer but it will save
people who wouldn't normally buy them some huge bucks in transom/hull repair bills.

The ones that I have don't have the ratchet. They have a binding wheel
in them. You tighten the strap, then when you pull the lever, it
tightens them nicely. They are made by Rod Holder, and I got them at
Bass Pro Shops. I had the ratchet ones, which worked just great, but
on my particular boat, the ratchet scratched the transom.

I saw a picture posted but haven't found it again. It was a 21' bow rider
that landed on top of the pickup towing it.
Truck sweared and stopped quick. No transom tie downs and the rear of the
boat came off the tandum trailer and landed upside down on the tow vehicle.
