Just reflecting the attitude of apple users who think they are invulnerable. The Apple computer users I know are careful...and smart enough to not seek advice about computer virii, ransomware, malware, et cetera, on a near-dead newsgroup that used to be about boating. Some Apple users are, I'm sure, careful and follow good security practices. Just like some Windows users. Security is about best practices, not necessarily the OS. Yeah, I don't download "torrents" or music/video files from usenet sources. I have "jailbroke" my iPhone a few times, but only after the jailbreaks have been available for a couple of weeks, and the reports are that they are clean. I tend to install the same JB apps I've used in the past, and under the same circumstances. In my younger days, I admit that I did some torrenting. I never got a virus that I was aware of, but as you mentioned above, I was careful what I downloaded. Never download something that doesn't have any reviews, and even if it does, take them with a grain of salt. Its not that hard to tell fake reviews/comments from real ones. I never got into the UseNET binaries. Nowadays, with Netflix, Amazon Prime and three Redbox's within two miles of my house, there's really no need to spend the time or waste the space with torrented movies. I always root my phones... But I wait until I see what happens to everyone else that does it. Sometimes the wrong method is very unhealthy for the phone! |

This is mostly kids "sharing" large files, mostly pirated. I was never happy with the software they want you to load. These days most music is on Youtube anyway. Movies show up on Amazon or Netflix pretty fast ....... Music I usually go to Grooveshark, AOL radio, or some 'underground' station.. A lot depends on exactly what you are looking for. There is some obscure "ripped from vinyl" stuff you will only find on the usenet binary groups. You can usually find very good rips on Amazon of things with commercial value. If you just want "radio" grade music with any popular following, it is usually on you tube. The actual quality will vary on that. It seems fine for playing in the car or out by the pool. If you actually have an engineered listening room, a real good system and good ears, there are probably unacceptable defects in that stream but I am OK with them. ;-) My ears may suck, but I've been pretty happy with much of the classical music and bluegrass I've found on YouTube. Some of those folks take a bit of pride in what they put up. If you get Total Recorder" or some other similar program you can save that audio stream. There are also some you tube specific recorders. I like Total Recorder because if you hear it on your speakers you can save it. It actually saves the digital input to the sound card tho. Obviously, garbage in garbage out but you have something to work with. I also have Sound Forge so I can sweeten it up a bit if I need to (like remove tape hiss and pops from old vinyl) |
