There are large Muslim regions in China. And they are major problems for
the Chinese. They have battled them a lot. Some regions want to set up
independent countries. China even banned Ramadan fasting at one time in
predominately Muslim regions.

Essentially the policy is "It is OK as long as nobody ever sees it or
hears about it".
If it ever inconveniences the government in any way it is stamped out.

Personally I don't care either way. This is China and the chinese have
the right to run their country as they wish. It is really none of our
business as long as they don't bother us with it. We certainly do not
want them telling us how our government should work.
I am not even that upset that they are building islands in the South
China Sea.
These are largely uninhabited spits of volcanic rock that everyone
claimed but nobody actually wanted to do anything with. We should be
able to negotiate some kind of settlement here without shooting
anyone.
