They are actually a decent hunting rifle for anything up to the size
of a wild boar or so.
With the right bullet it would certainly take down wood chucks and you
could take the head off a turkey. I am sure a deer would bleed out
without too much of a chase but I think I would want something a tad
heavier if I was shooting at a ****ed off 400 pound tusker coming at
me..

I wouldn't want to try to tap one charging at me either. A 12g. slug would be more suitable for that task. but It would easily take a wild boar down if you casually whacked it. Especially if you could get the pig behind the ear.

That is what the rangers carry. Pump guns with 7 shot tubes and slugs.
Guys also use 308/30-06 class rifles.

no disagreement from me. But if a person was confronted with a head on charger, then 12g. with steel buckshot might be the wisest choice.

What do I know though. I've never huntd hog.

They are astually a decent hunting rifle for anything up to the size
of a wild boar or so.

Would that not be true of the Ruger Mini-14 also?

===

I'd certainly think so but the question was about AR-15 types. I
think a lot of states limit hunting guns to a 5 round magazine so that
could be an issue either way.

I'm thinking that most of the folks who would use the AR style for hunting wouldn't
be loading it up with enough accessories to take on ISIS singlehandedly.

I don't know why anyone would want to hunt with an AR, but there are
plenty of "hunting legal" rifle mags for it in five round capacity.
Brownell's has some:

Short; light weight; easy to carry; lots of fire power; accurate.
Other than that, I can't think of any reasons either.

They make is sound like most rifle bullets will not go through both
sides of the level III-A vest..
You really need a ballistic plate to stop a rifle and even then, not
all rifles.

Are there any handguns set up for the .223/5.56 (M855) round?

Several but this may be ugly enough to attract their attention

Wow, hadn't seen that one yet. For 'target shooting and hunting'. Wonder how long
before someone sells a front handgrip for the thing.

Whoops. Should have known:

I especially like that it's qualified in all combat zones! Hell, you can take that
puppy to northern Canada and do some serious goose shooting.
