I am using commercial in dash players now and they all suck, including the $1000 one in the Lincoln. You spent $1000 to get a music player in your car? Really? Gosh, I just use a $10 cable to plug an iPhone or iPod into the car stereo. I guess that Vega you have doesn't have a factory sound system with an MP3 player, 6 pack CD, Nav and blue tooth to your phone. Actually, my car has all of that, sans the 6 pack CD player. I prefer the separate garmin nav device, and I also have 3 nav apps on my iphone, including garmin usa. My iPhone also has 4000+ tunes on it, a tad more than you can squeeze onto six CDs. I don't think we have actually listened to a CD for 10 years but it is there. This thing has a USB port that will take a 32g thumb drive but you can get more on a 4g than we usually have in a typical play list. I can talk to my iphone and it talks back. I don't accept incoming calls when I am driving, unless it is my wife...and I don't listen to web casts. My wife listens to Bob and Tom on the way to work. It is not broadcast here so she pulls it off the web. It bluetooths from the phone. Everything is hands free on the phone if you do take a call. I think if we were interested in things to do entertainment-wise while in the car, I'd get an iPad Air and a dash mount. You can even make phone calls from an iPad using one of several apps, such as Skype. But we don't often spend more than an hour or two in the car. -- Sarah Palin is watching the Sochi Olympic Games from the front porch of her house. |

That is what you get with the OEM support. Microsoft can give you the right answer if you have a retail key. The only time I ever talked to them, they sounded "merican" to me. When I went to Dell (the OEM), I got "Bob from Bombay" who said I had to reload the system. The only reason I called in the first place was that was what the only message I had said to do (registration problems) I ended up figuring it out myself, like I have done for the rest of the 30 years I have been running Wintel products.. I used to talk to MS about problems at times. Both ours and theirs, but the equipment I designed and the test systems, were run on PC's so I was listed as a developer and got direct connection to engineers and not Bob of Bombay. Was not bad service. But we also paid money for the privilege. When I was still working, the best source of information was the old VM Forums. I never had a reason to talk to Microsoft about anything. How wonderful, eh? So therefore you are an expert on Microsoft tech support! I get it. If you keep making things up you can always be right. I clearly stated a couple of times, I only talked to MS support once and they bl;ew me off because my father in law didn't have a retail number ... but he did say he had the magic code I could type in to get past my registration problem if I paid him. It was Dell (the OEM) that said "reload the system" I managed to get it going myself without any of that. I would not have even called them but my FIL wanted me to. I do understand that doing a "slip" install is the easiest way to fix corrupted system files tho and if that is what MS told you to do, that is probably what you had. That install process only refreshes the files and leaves your configuration alone. I just did one a couple days ago because it triggers a complete update from SP3 (the version I used) and I wanted all of those files in one place from a clean load. I would still like to see SP4. I remember that ****! I called one of the support folks, don't remember where, and it was $25 and he would stay until the problem is fixed. I figured by the time they said that they already knew the answer and figured they'd get the money for 15 seconds of work. Never paid it. Figured I'd spend all day on the problem rather than pay someone $25 to fix it over the phone. |

A grand is really not much for the entertainment system upgrade on a nice car. If I was an Apple guy I would say it was free since it was bundled in the price of a trim package in the Lincoln but that unit was $900 and change if you put it in your F150. Can you talk to your Ipod (and does it listen?). Does it mute and switch over to the phone on command or when you have an incoming call? Does it bluetooth to your smart phone so you can listen to web casts? Hold on for a bit there Gregg. He has to check with AppleCare. :-) I'm not adverse to getting good quality tech support when I need it. I'm not, after all, a Luddite. :) Real men don't ask for directions. |

I did get more help when I was a Microsoft Windoze beta tester. You must have just been your same charming self you are here and they ****ed you. Yeah, we all remember when he got that beta version of windows weeks before all the other registered beta testers got theirs... snerk How would *you* know what categories of beta testers MS had at the time, and when they got their distros? Answer: you wouldn't know. Harry, you bragged about it for quite some time, like you do your filters, if you know what I mean. Yes he did. I remember because a friend was at school getting his CNE and we were talking about it. He was a real Microsoft Beta tester which meant he went to a convention and paid the 300 bucks....:) The uninformed shall inherit the earth. Seems t be working out that way. |

You can get that by going to a Windows Conference or Convention.. Cost my bud 300 bucks for the day and lectures, and he got software from them to "beta test". I remember the business package or net package I think it might have been win 2000 that our buddy here said he got about a month before my friend got it... weeks before it came out..:) |

I'm sure among the next iterations will be a blue tooth connect to the car speakers. And there are some nice looking mounts I've seen that help avoid the duct tape look. Not anything that concerns us, though, since we aren't much into in-car entertainment or calls to or from the driver. -- Sarah Palin is watching the Sochi Olympic Games from the front porch of her house. |

Someone in my family gave me a Sirius receiver back when I was making the long drives back and forth to Florida. I think I used it once for about an hour before shutting it off and never bothered with it again. The very rare times that I drive any distance I much prefer to watch the scenery or what's happening around the vehicle. Weird, but that's the way it is. |
