I think Hawaii is too far away for rec.boats. You'd be spending a lot of money flying back and forth

One of the guys I worked with at IBM lived in Hawaii for 10 years
(retired Navy). He says the novelty wears off pretty quickly. It is a
very expensive place to live.

I spent a week there courtesy of Uncle Sam as R&R during Vietnam. The week was great - absolutely
spectacular - especially as I hadn't seen my wife for six months.

But that week was enough. I think I'd much rather go to Key West, if I really needed a beach.

It's not the beaches, it's the area. I'd like to drive to Key West and see the sights down there.
Maybe do some fishing, but mostly looking around. Probably fly into Miami and rent a car, something
like that. It's further than I'd want to pull the trailer.

Cocoa Beach, and Cocoa, were awesome as a single twenty year old working at Cape Canaveral also.

Don't know, John. On both islands Oahu and Kauai, I saw guys with
buckets of stuff on the beach. They had some pretty stout rods
casting out into the ocean, but I didn't see anybody reeling anything
in. I imagine the real fishing is further out.

I suppose you could get a head boat trip and maybe catch something. On
one of our Disney cruise I
went out on a fishing trip - a head boat with about 20 people on it.
Spent half a day out there,and
only one fish was caught, a little ten-inch something or other. What a
waste. But the boat ride was
fun.


I'm surprised disney didn't supply animatronic fish for you.

I went out on a $25 a head boat the last time I was in Hawaii. I was very
surprised at how nice it was, considering the price. We were out for five
hours, caught a mess of fish, and the mate cooked a bunch of them for our
lunch. I suppose if we hadn't caught anything, we would have been served
bologna sandwiches.

As with your trip, the boat ride was fun, with spectacular vistas of the
island and the ocean.

little stir crazy as there is really no place to get away.

The Keys are great but you need a boat to really get the whole
experience. It is worth the tow.
Key West is just a tourist stop. There is one nice beach in Key West,
the spoil pile from a dredging.at the Navy base.
Hit the bars on Duval street, see a few museums and take a ride on the
conch train. By then you are ready to go up to Big Pine and get out in
your boat. Snorkeling at Looe Key is great if you like coral reefs
and there is fishing on both sides there. Flats on the gulf side and
blue water on the Atlantic.

One Disney cruise had a stopover in Key West for a day. That day was enough. It's about 2400 miles
round trip. I suppose as part of a two=week trip that might not be too bad. There are some other
spots along the route that would be worth a stopover - Charleston, Savannah, ...

How big of a boat? Do they rent skiffs by the month? Or just buy a boat
and tow it back to Calif. Seems to be better deals than here.
