Mikek Actually, Mikey, I'm just a tad left of where the center in this country used to be. The problem is the "right" has moved so far to the right it has shifted the center. As to whether I state in my political posts what I believe, well, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you aren't equipped intellectually to offer up such a judgment. I never really understood "new math". The reference point changes therefore you are now a "tad" bit to the left? Looking back, you used to be where you claim to be now but I think more recently you took a hard turn to port somewhere along the line. One thing that I just don't get: Progressives push for entitlements and "do good" programs that from a compassionate point of view nobody can really argue with. But the hard core reality is that the country is going broke (or *is* broke) with what we have in tax revenue based programs now. Other posters have pointed out that slashing defense spending still doesn't come close to filling the coffers to pay for what's in force now, let alone pay for more. Same with business tax revenues and the "1 per centers". Nailing them with high marginal taxes still won't raise enough money. The deficits still have to be borrowed. Somewhere along the line ... and this is where some of the Tea Party preachings have some validity ... some very difficult decisions are going to have to be made in terms of how much tax revenues can continue to be earmarked for entitlements. The progressive philosophy seems to always be "we can't afford *not* to invest in these federally funded programs. Seems to me we can't afford much of anything ... period. This, along with the article I referenced in an earlier post this morning about a prediction that, unless things change, in four years there will be more work-age people *not* working and collecting some form of federal aid than people working and paying taxes only makes matters much worse. Coincidentally, today's Washington Post had an article about the harm 'do good' food stamps are causing. http://www.washingtonpost.com/sf/nat...rc=nl_cuzheads When reading about the crap the kids were getting for breakfast, I kept wondering why the mom didn't do what my mom did to feed five boys on a sergeant's pay. We ate lots of oatmeal and cream-of-wheat for breakfast. Sometimes we got some raisons therein. We also ate lots of greens, John H. -- Hope you're having a great day! |
