If I were to give up long range cruising for one reason or another, a
nice sportfish like that might be very interesting. They usually
have the speed to get you out to the Bahamas and back in a reasonable
length of time. There is some great fishing out there, along with a
lot of cruising and diving possibilities.

Back when I was totally bat **** boating crazy and the Navigator was
in Florida, I took the USCG course over the winter to get a 6 pack
license. My intention was to get a sportsfish type boat for use
during the summer while we were in MA and do some fishing charters
with my brother as first mate. All went as planned and I ended up
getting a brand new 37' Egg Harbor Sportsyacht. It had twin 420 hp
Caterpillar diesels and on the sea trial topped out at 34 knots.
Cruise was more like 26 to 28 knots. But I quickly learned that
cruise became more like 17-19 knots at best in the waters of Cape Cod
Bay, Buzzards Bay or the "Canyons" most of the time. Anything faster
was an uncomfortable ride and the hull was slamming into the waves. I
think I was spoiled by the Navigator because it could cruise at 19
knots in a much higher sea state and still provide a very stable,
comfortable ride. The Egg was great on those rare, occasional days
with 1 to 2 foot waves but that doesn't happen often.

After two summers I realized that chartering wasn't my bag for a
number of reasons. The boat takes a beating when fishing and most of
the people that wanted to go out on a fishing trip also liked to get
half **** faced. I didn't want the responsibility, so I sold the
boat and brought the Navigator back to MA.

But, we did catch a lot of fish, including our first tuna with that
boat.
