The winds were shifting from the NW to N. @16-18mph.. gusts to 23
mph.. right around the time of capsizing..

That inlet can be a real pain, today, I navigated it with an outgoing tide and winds
driving waves (the exact opposite direction) into the inlet. Took a real beating, but had
no choice other than taking 6 to 7 foot closely spaced waves head on.. (very little room
for maneuver in that inlet)..

"Rogue Wave" is imprecise terminology which usually means a wave that
is much larger than others around it. All we know for sure is that
they were near a tricky ocean inlet, and inlets are a breeding ground
for breaking waves because of shallow water and currents. They
probably had little or no warning. Reported and forecasted wave
heights are an average, and from a statistical stand point it is
entirely possible to get waves that are 2 and 3 times larger than
average, sometimes more. Waves also dramatically increase in height
and steepness as they approach shallow water and/or an ebb current.
It is not height alone which capsizes boats but the steepness of the
leading edge. As steepness increases, the wave literally trips over
itself and starts to break. It has been calculated that any boat can
be capsized if the height of a breaking wave approaches a little more
than half the boats width (beam).

that could give any kid of warning that waves like that could be upon

Some people are bound to do stupid. A couple weeks ago, a 23' boat capsized
entering Tomales Bay. Entrance can be a killer. Has wind funneled by Point
Reyes, and can have breaking waves, and really breaking waves. Someone said
this boat actually went end for end and not sideways. But unbelievable luck
was with them as there were 2 young kids in the cabin and were trapped for 2
hours upside down before being rescued. No one died. As to commercial,
they do stupid also. Guy I knew ran a party boat and killed a few people.
He used to fish locally to San Francisco where I knew him.

The sentence imposed by U.S. District Judge Ancer Haggerty went beyond
the recommended federal guidelines of about 3½ to 4 years after

I do not know if it was really excessive. But what was actually gained by
an extra 3 years? Except for filling the prison and costing the taxpayers a
lot more money.

Running inlets in a power boat isn't any better. We had a wedding to
attend on Fire Island, Long Island a year ago so we decided to go by
boat since we had gone north for the summer, and FI was sort of on the
way south. On days with only average wind and sea conditions we were
seeing 6 to 10 ft breaking seas in Jones Beach inlet. It really gets
your attention.
