The wife and I were out driving around on Sanibel Island late in the
afternoon on Tuesday. As we were driving west on Middle Gulf Drive,
near the corner of Casa Ybel Drive, a large animal emerged from the
underbrush on the left side and slowly ambled across the road about
100 yards in front of us, quickly disappearing into undeveloped land
on the right side. We both looked at each other in amazement and
quickly came to the conclusion that it must have been a panther. It
was the size of a large dog only longer, good sized tail, very cat
like features, with a yellowish/tan color - way too big for a bobcat.
There was no time to take a picture unfortunately but I'm sure the
Sanibel Board of Tourism is just as glad of that. A confirmed
panther sighting within a half mile from a lot of high end resorts and
condominiums would be about as welcome as a Great White shark on Miami
Beach.

Damn. I'd love to see a panther. Apparently, there have been other
sightings on Sanibel, controversially, with lots of denials. If the
sightings are confirmed, besides the safety concerns, it would open a
whole can of worms regarding endangered species and development.

Yup, we had Coyotes in Essex for years but the DEP and everyone else
denied it until some hot shot had his wife and kid stood up face to face
out there hiking on a trail. Gotta' tell you, I encountered on one day
coming out of a friends house on the lake outside of town, and the one
thing I noticed was the thing was probably a foot taller than I even
imagined... Not too proud to admit, I almost **** my pants getting into
my topless jeep and getting the hell out of there. Now we are getting
reports of fisher cats and even a bear sighting, officials of course are
denying it...

Here in NJ, we've got plenty of coyotes. I see one or two most every
year. Seeing them is a treat, but hearing them howl is eerie. Getting
back to cougars, I've heard from responsible people that they've been
seen in Litchfield County.

We also used to have coyotes at our old home in Westchester County,
less than 5 miles from the NYC limits. They were not all that large,
sort of like a mid sized dog or a large fox.

Every now and again, they make it into the city itself. The geese in
Central Park are just too tempting.

I live in NJ and the wildlife have made a major return. Bear, beaver,
coyote, bald eagles, fox, can be seen regularly. I've even seen an
occasional otter. Twenty years ago, it was a different story.

I've heard reports of cougars here, but there's always denials or claims
that it was an escape.

We've got them in Alexandria, VA, also. A little park a few blocks away is home to one (or more).
Hopefully they'll develop an appetite for Canada geese, squirrels, and stray cats.
