The wife and I were out driving around on Sanibel Island late in the afternoon on Tuesday. As we were driving west on Middle Gulf Drive, near the corner of Casa Ybel Drive, a large animal emerged from the underbrush on the left side and slowly ambled across the road about 100 yards in front of us, quickly disappearing into undeveloped land on the right side. We both looked at each other in amazement and quickly came to the conclusion that it must have been a panther. It was the size of a large dog only longer, good sized tail, very cat like features, with a yellowish/tan color - way too big for a bobcat. There was no time to take a picture unfortunately but I'm sure the Sanibel Board of Tourism is just as glad of that. A confirmed panther sighting within a half mile from a lot of high end resorts and condominiums would be about as welcome as a Great White shark on Miami Beach. http://binged.it/THrslU http://www.tenan.vuurwerk.nl/reports/mourad/Image97.jpg Damn. I'd love to see a panther. Apparently, there have been other sightings on Sanibel, controversially, with lots of denials. If the sightings are confirmed, besides the safety concerns, it would open a whole can of worms regarding endangered species and development. http://www.topix.com/album/detail/sa...MJ98ICUIN23OCO http://forum.bestofsanibelcaptiva.com/viewtopic.php? p=45204&sid=34879d32f9eaa03ca56617e67a53854d Bye the bye, some Florida bobcats do have tails. http://www.realestatesarasota.net/bobcat/florida.htm |
