Default dies after given gas

I have a 1976 Cobia with the omc straight six. I repalced the plugs, fixed the fuel line at the tank that was worn, I got the motor running, but when i give it gas it dies unless i really ease into the throttle then it will run the rpm's up.
What could be the problem?
Thanks Brad

Accelerator pump

agreed. The accelerator pump in the carburetor is defective.

Always good to get a second opinion.

Based on my experience and what I've observed, I'd say your accelerator pump is bad. But, I've also
had a bad coil act up when I applied the throttle.

Sure. That would be a good thing to try if he has a spare one kicking
around. Also a wet distributor cap.
