Some better picks and details. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...wmdJ_blog.html Maybe if the right wing would be willing to maintain our infrastructure, including funding national parks and monuments, this wouldn't have happened. The monument was restored in 1996 Clinton must have cut corners on the restoration. I guess you forgot who was in control of BOTH houses in 1996... January 3, 1995: Republicans gained control of both houses for the first time since the 1950s. |

The monument was restored in 1996 Clinton must have cut corners on the restoration. I remember it was closed right after 9/11 for renovations as we went to DC Smithsonians not a month after 9/11. Figured we would miss the crowds and were we right. People thought we were nuts, bunch of scared monkeys. When we got there, 2 uniforms on one corner and 2 suits on the other, with very few people in sight, no line-ups at all. Saw more of DC in 4 days than one would see in 2 weeks with normal crowds. Didn't see anyone even litter it was so well organized and orderly. Got cheap rates too. Never once had to wait in line or for a second bus. The only way to see DC. Priceless. But makes me wonder, can't they fix it for more than 10 years at a go? -- If it is all Bush's fault, then how come Obama is doing much more of the same and expecting different results? |

Those are some pretty good shots , of course there has been cracks in it for some time, but nothing of structure to cause panic, but I think this will get someones attention. With some federal funding and a bunch of corporate and private donations, I imagine it will be repaired better than new. It worked for the Statue of Liberty. |

I have to wonder if some honest engineer is gonna' look at the cracks in those big blocks and say, "it can't be made safe"... I am not saying it can't, but with such big cracks, in such significant structural components, I have to wonder. |
