After Krakatoa exploded in the 1880's the entire world saw a dramatic increase in the number of "spectacular sunsets" and this lasted for several years - just from a single event. We haven't had any major erruptions for a bit, so there's likely a broad interplay of factors starting with your location & the prevailing winds.
