Me and SWMBO just got back from a three day cruise to the
San Juan Islands aboard Cruis'n Rulz!. Launched from Shilshole Marina about 12 pm Saturday. Perfect weather all weekend. Spent the first night anchored stern to off the east side of Blakely Island, in a little cove I've been going to for years. Sunday night in the Shaw Island cove. Everything was perfect except.... On launching Saturday morning, I Backed down, launched, and went to park the rig while SWMBO moved the boat to the end of the dock. Upon returning a few minutes later, I flipped on the blower and opened the engine hatch as usual before startup. I was greeted by a rapidly flooding engine bay. In thirteen years of launching Cruis'n Rulz! I have never left the drain plug out, until now. PANIC. The pumps were not even keeping up with the flow. She was down by the stern and drawing deeper as I watched. The water was over the sole in the forward cabin. I looked up to the parking lot. 2 rigs were blocking all the spaces, with the morons doing the tie down routine in the parking lot. No way I was going to get down to the dock with my rig before it was to late. I always keep a spare drain plug on board; never understood why until now. Grabbed it and dove in the 45° water, down to the keel, and screwed it in. A second dive with a 5/8 wrench to tighten it. Damn that water's cold. Spent all day Saturday with a honking tension headache. From now on, I'll tie a red ribbon to the lower unit whenever I take the drain plug out. Don't want to take that dive again... Okay, we've heard plenty of ramp stories. How about expanding the weekend stuff for us. East side of Blakely? Near the Indian camp or further south? Were you in Blind Bay on Shaw? Did you throw a crab pot out? Did you visit the Nuns at the Ferry dock? Come on JR, give us something to bathe in other than freezing water at the ramp!!! jps |

the Nuns at the Ferry dock? Did you see where the nuns are selling the Little Portion Store and will be leaving Shaw? Next year, if you put in there for provisions, there may be nun at all. |

Next year, if you put in there for provisions, there may be nun at all. Very funny. It's sad to think they'll not be there any longer. Someone's going to end up with the little store. I think the citizens will still allow that tiny bit of commerce to continue since it serves as the only source of staples (just in case you're still in a punny mood that's food, not metal) on the island. I expect that little piece of land will fetch a very nice price since it includes the only "public" dock on the island plus the potential of securing the ferry contract. |

Geezus, no sympathy.... ok- On Blakely, the little cove
opposite Armitage Rock 48.35.65 122.41.69. The Northern-most cove of 3. A little swelly; not too bad, and the cove has some gnarly rocks scattered here and there, which are covered at high tide. Pursuers of the spot would do well to scope these out before anchoring. There is no room for swing, so a warp to shore is essential. Yup- Blind Bay on Shaw. Not very many overnighters there on Sunday evening, and everybody buttoned up by 10PM. We dined on sumptuous fair SWMBO created in the galley, and stayed up till 1AM, drinking and watching movies on the 9" TV/VCR. It was absolutely dead calm. She delighted in the Island experience, never having been there before. Spent part of Sunday in Friday Harbor, where she spent a good amount of time in the women's clothing boutiques(you know how THAT is). Followed the trail of ice cream cones back to the source, and partook. (no Rocky Road....). Heavy fog Monday morning; about 1/2 mile visibility. GPS sure is handy. Got all the nums for getting up there and back down. We repeatedly snagged kelp on the return to Deception Pass, so much so, I thought I had spun the prop. This finally cleared up going down Saratoga Passage. An uneventful recovery and tow home. Shilshole was deserted as usual on Monday afternoons. In fact, I almost never have to wait to launch or recover there. Very nice. JR jps wrote: "JR North" wrote in message ... Hey, much better. Thanks. Blind Bay is so peaceful. Last year some guy
ditched his boat in the southeast section of the bay and it was a pretty nasty eyesore. Then he died and it sunk. I guess a bunch of locals pitched in to refloat it and tow it out. I don't know how long the Nuns are going to be there but it's a real hoot to roll into the Ferry dock and check out their little store. It's the only commercial thing on Shaw. I love that ice cream stand in Friday Harbor. Those are some big cones!!! Last time through I had a root beer cone, mmmmmm. GPS is a lifesaver, literally. I've gotten caught in fog up there where it's not safe and made it through just fine, thanks to the electronics. Last time that happened I immediately signed up for a coastal navigation class. I was having daymares about what it'd be like without the gear. Those are the times when you begin to understand why alchoholism isn't unknown in the maritime business. I was thinking about Blake island and you said Blakely. I couldn't imagine where the hell on Blake you could anchor other than the Indian Village...oops. What's SWMBO? If this were a singles page that'd be single white male big organ. But I digress to my youth. jps "JR North" wrote in message ... Spikey heels sounds like a fantasy version. I imagined something more along the lines of a cast iron pan wielding stump of a woman in a nightgown and hairnet. Just to be clear, I'm not attributing these qualities to your significant other JR. Just the image of the phrase SWMBO. |

You could take it either way. Personally, I prefer (and she
is more like) the former. JR jps wrote: "Gould 0738" wrote in message ...
