I'd like a bright finish before sealing with varathane, and am asking for your experiences. Any name brands to pump??? I wouldn't stain it at all. I do need it darker. My friend, the Cabinet Maker calls it " Luan ". I said, " Ya, its Mahogany ". He said " Ya it's Luan "..... Then I got it. Minwax would work fine. You will most likely need to use a sanding sealer, too, or it will look like you applied the Varathane over sand. Make sure you use a 220 grit or finer paper to knock down the grain before applying the finish. Lauan is not mahogany and it is VERY unlikely that you actually have lauan, if purchased in the last few years. Lauan was once widely available from the Philippines, but due to over harvesting, is almost unavailable. Bottom line? No telling what wood you actually have... Wiping stain, sanding sealer, grain removal, and then a coat of finish should keep you out of trouble.... -- It is usually futile to try to talk facts and analysis to people who are enjoying a sense of moral superiority in their ignorance. *-Thomas Sowell Grady-White Gulfstream, out of Oak Island, NC. It is going to be visible, and in the weather. |
