Stain for Mahogany

Any recommendations for Stain? I'd like a bright finish before sealing
with varathane, and am asking for your experiences.

Any name brands to pump???

I wouldn't stain it at all.

I do need it darker. My friend, the Cabinet Maker calls it " Luan ".

Do you have some spare wood you can test your stain on? Also bear in
mind it darkens with age.
I put Minwax cherry on some luan plywood it came out a bit darker than
I expected. I should have used natural.
The plywood is the back of this cabinet.

Minwax would work fine. You will most likely need to use a sanding
sealer, too, or it will look like you applied the Varathane over sand.
Make sure you use a 220 grit or finer paper to knock down the grain
before applying the finish.

Lauan is not mahogany and it is VERY unlikely that you actually have
lauan, if purchased in the last few years. Lauan was once widely
available from the Philippines, but due to over harvesting, is almost
unavailable. Bottom line? No telling what wood you actually have...

Wiping stain, sanding sealer, grain removal, and then a coat of finish
should keep you out of trouble....

They sell it as Mahogany. It looks like Mahogany. I think Ill test a
dark stain. It is going to be visible, and in the weather.

Lauan comes in many natural shades since it is a generic term for
several different trees.

You didn't say what make of boat you're working on. I had two Chris
Craft cruisers back when "woodies" were still around. I used
Dolphonite walnut filler stain for the most part. It became hard to
find Chris Craft paint , stain & varnish, so had to try others.
Dolphonite came the closest to the original CC walnut that most CC
boats had. Pettit had good paint & varnish, too.
