He sure didn't help... "During his presidency Buchanan supported the attempt to establish Kansas as a slave state. He also failed to take decisive action when South Carolina left the Union. Buchanan argued that the Constitution granted the federal government no power to "coerce a State into submission." He also recommended that the Constitution should be amended to guarantee slavery where it already existed." |

The civil war was not about slavery. Was economics and states rights as the driving forces. Lincoln did not issue an executive order, the Emancipation Proclamation, until 1863. The war started in 1861. The fact that Lincoln, a Republican, the party of anti-slavery was elected POTUS, was a driving force for the South to start seceding, but was enough to cause states to start seceding. You do realize the Emancipation Proclamation did not free all the slaves? Only the slaves in Northern (Union) controlled states. Lincoln was for freeing the slaves by paying the slave owners for the freedom. The Congress would not agree. So? |

The civil war was not about slavery. yes, it was. Was economics and states rights as the driving forces. ROFLMAO!! hey genius...you think slaves had nothing to do with states rights and economics?? HAHAHAHAHA Lincoln did not issue an executive order, the Emancipation Proclamation, until 1863. to prevent europeans from throwing in their lot with the south in a balance of power play The war started in 1861. The fact that Lincoln, a Republican, the party of anti-slavery was elected POTUS, was a driving force for the South to start seceding, but was enough to cause states to start seceding. You do realize the Emancipation Proclamation did not free all the slaves? Only the slaves in Northern (Union) controlled states there were almost no slaves in the north. some in maryland...a few in other states.. |
