Canadians lead longer, healthier lives than Americans

Compared to their neighbours south of the border, Canadians live longer,
healthier lives. Research published in BioMed Central's open access
journal Population Health Metrics has found this disparity between the
two countries, suggesting that America's lack of universal health care
and lower levels of social and economic equality are to blame.

David Feeny, from Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research, Oregon,
USA, worked with a team of American researchers to study data from the
Joint Canada/United States Survey of Health 2002/03. He said, "Canada
and the US share a common border and enjoy very similar standards of
living, yet life expectancy in Canada is higher than in the US. There
are two distinct potential explanations for the gap: differences in
access to health care and in the prevalence of poverty".

Canadians have a universal 'prenatal to grave' health service, which is
free at point of care, while Americans' access to health insurance is
typically based on employment, income (Medicaid), or age (Medicare), and
is not universal. The degree of social inequality is also more
pronounced in the US. The researchers found that Canadians can expect
2.7 more years of 'perfect health' than Americans – more than half of
the gap found between the richest and poorest people in Canada. Speaking
about the results, Feeny said, "The difference in health between the two
countries seems to be associated with substantial differences in access
to care as well as substantial differences in social and economic
inequality. Yet distinguishing among the potential explanations for the
differences in health between the two countries would require
longitudinal data. Perhaps it is time for Canada and the US to
contemplate a joint longitudinal survey."

Probably true but for the assumption it is health care.

Fewer Canadians can afford drugs, weed, booze and smokes. Lower wages,
higher gasoline costs and higher taxes make us walk more.

More excercise shoveling snow as few of us can afford snow blowers. And
we get more snow. Many row canoes because they be cheaper than 225 HP
inboards.

If we were having this conversation in a different context the left
would say it is because the Canadians don't have 100,000,000 (one for
each of BPs oppressed middle classers) guns.

Funny how the argument will change depending on the agenda.
I have already presented data that the uninsured really just die in a
rate of a couple more per 100,000, a statistical dead heat,
particularly when you take out the guns, drugs and lifestyle
differences.

So many variables for the difference, you know making it "health care"
is BS. Pure utter BS. But there is the gullable weak minded who don't
question other peoples motives for such bull****.

Ya, we have gun control. Criminals and government have them but the
honest sheep...not as many. Many believe it is why we have twice as
many house break in per capitata. That and the turnstile justice for
the crime.

And would bet you are more likely to get knifed in Canada. In fact
blood is drying as I speak on one of the public transit platforms in
this so called safe city. I think I felt safer in Chicago.

any proof? what's the purchasing power parity of canada vs the US?
it's a simple measure. what is it?

Yep. Start with:
http://www.fraserinstitute.org/tools/Default.htm

On that web site somewhere they have a financial freedom list of all US
atates and Canadian provinces. Of the 10 Canadian provinces, we hold
the 9 bottom positions and the 10th province is much higher.

But I am not going to waste the time on you to find the exact link. You
probably wouldn't use it anyways.

again, where's the proof? the canadian dollar has appreciated 25%
against the US dollar because your govt regulated the free market and
ours didnt.

what's funny about the right is that when they talk about 'socilalist'
changes to US healthcare, they preach our healthcare is PERFECT. it's
FREE MARKET. we have the BEST.

when it's shown this isnt true, then healthcare is USELESS. you dont
NEED IT...

propganda...not facts...is what the right preaches.

Given you have never traveled and lived elsewhere makes your opinion
kind of myopic and sheepish.
