John, I found this, you may want to give it a shot:

When Firefox runs into a problem while shutting down, it leaves a file
called "parent.lock" in the profile folder in your User Profile.
You'll need to delete this file in order really clean things up.

The best way to find that file since the path is really long, is to
just do a File Search, making sure to search in "Hidden Files and
Folders"

Thanks for the tip, but the search, including the hidden files, didn't
turn up anything.

When it fails to close properly or crashes (hmm... same thing) it can
leave that file, but not always. *As you see, Firefox won't re-open if
its process is still running, but after you close that process, it
will restart. *If, after you close the process it *still* won't
restart, then check for that file and delete it. *That's the

Once I end the process, Firefox starts normally. I looked for the
parent.lock file, even in the hidden folders, but couldn't locate one.
I went to the site below, which gives some more tips. Hopefully one or
more will work.

One thing you might try, John, just as a quick process-of-elimination
exercise is to rename the firefox executable to something like
firefox_1.exe to determine how it behaves with the new name. If it
behaves normally with the new name (closes normally), you might try
running a program called Malwarebytes, if you haven't already to check
for malware or rootkits. (Malwarebytes is available in a functional
freeware version.) Just a thought.

Come to think of it, I have left my portable firefox renamed to
firefoxportable_1.exe. Haven't had issues for quite some time.
