Wife insisted taking our 1 yr old Golden Retriever sailing today
against my wishes. "She won't be in the way" she said. Damn dog took
up most of the cockpit floor and I could not adjust the main cuz he
was sitting on the mainsheet. Boat is trying to jibe and I can't
adjust for a "soft" jibe instead of a hard one because of him.
A little choppy, maybe 3' seas, maybe 12 kt wind, a nice day for
sailing. Dog never looked ill but immediately after jibe, BARF, BARF,
all over the cockpit. Never taking the dang dog again.

The guy I crewed with took his little Border Collie on occasion.
That dog was no problem.

Just don't take a black cat. They are unlucky. The same black cat was
on Bismarck, HMS Cossack, and HMS Ark Royal. RN wouldn't let him on
another ship after that. Three ships gone, and Oscar died of old age
in Belfast.

Seeing it's a Retriever, I've surprised it didn't' want to jump
overboard and swim along side.

overboard and swim along side.
We were "sailing" in light airs surrounded by ducks (actually the ducks
were paddling around us). We looked across the water at what we thought
was another boat with a string of ducks, but one did not look right. It
was a lab. He saw the ducks and went after them. The couple got the
dog back on board and started to take care of the boat. The dog went off
the back of the boat. They saw it and started following the dog from
the cockpit to the bow, where they lost track of the dog. They are
standing on the bow calling for the dog. Mean time the dog had gone
around to the stern climbed up in the boat and went up to the bow to see
what his owner were looking at.

Several years ago, a small dog was found swimming all alone 50 miles
offshore in the Gulf of Mexico somewhere NW of Clearwater, FL. Turns
out that she had fallen off a passing yacht the night before and was
not missed for many hours. She had been in the water for about 7
hours if I remember right. Lucky Dog.

Our previous Golden did not like boating because she was afraid of
dolphins, She'd stare out of the cockpit whining and bark at them all
night. Drove us nuts.
