Default Firmware update on Garmin 292

Anyone manage to do that ?

Only image on www.garmin.com is for "usb"; but mine is connected over
serial. And that won't work.

I do have a USB attached card programmer, but it will not accept that
either. The programmer attachment should be OK. It's working OK from within
mapsource.

Please, someone help....

If I understand it right from this link:

http://www.garmin.com/support/downlo...ls.jsp?id=1399

the download puts the update on a 8mb (or larger) Garmin Data Card and
the update runs from the data card when it is put in the GPS.

So I guess you need to run the download with a programmer attached to
the PC and a card in it.

There is also a recent update for the USB card programmer, maybe you
want to run that too:

Yes I did that (inkluding upgrade to latest usb drivers), but it fails with
a "there is a problem with the usb device" message. But the usb device works
fine from within mapsource where I can load wpt and routes onto the
card/chip.

When you plug the USB Programmer in, does a Garmin USB Device show up in
the Device Manager? If not, the drivers may be be installed yet.

Check the Device Manager and see if there is a failed install for
something (that will have a yellow question mark). If there is,
uninstall or remove that, unplug USB programmer, and restart the computer.

After the restart, plug in the USB programmer. If the New Hardware
Found Wizard finds has found the USB Programmer, lead it to the drivers
(in a c:\garmin folder normally) and let it complete the driver install.

At that point your USB programmer will show up in the Device Manager and
should be seen in Windows Explorer as a Removable Drive if it has a Data
Card in it. Or at least I think it will.

But if the Garmin USB Device shows up in the Device Manager, try running
the update *.exe file again.

Looks OK in the device manager.

Mapsource can see it as "USB data card programmer" (when you either receive
og send to "device"). And I cane erase/up- and down load to the chip from
within mapsource. I guess that proves the device drivers are OK ??

It DOES NOT show up as a removable disk. Should it ?

I've tried to uninstall/re-install and run thye executbale zip *several*
times ...

Yes, that seems to.

I can't remember if it should or not. The memory in new Garmin GPS
receivers and the memory cards in slots in the GPS show up that way. I
don't know if the cards in the USB programmer do too or not.

Do you have winzip so that you can extract the files from the download?
That download file is an archive with five files in it.

When I run the GPSMAP292_290_USB.exe files, winzip opens, shows me the
contents of the archive, and it wants to extract the files to a
c:\garmin folder. The download contains five files:

Gsd22_02w10.txt
program_card.exe
gsd20_0230.txt
gsd21_0230.txt
GMX9X_0290.txt

So you need to get those extracted to a folder and run the
program_card.exe file. Here are the upload instructions from the
GMX9X_0290.txt file:

Upload Instructions - USB Card Programmer Update

Instructions for uploading the new software using a USB Card Programmer:

1. Download the appropriate self-extracting archive file onto your hard
drive.

2. Unzip the files in the archive by running the downloaded executable
file.

3. Make sure a USB Card Programmer is connected to your computer, and
that a data card is inserted into the programmer.

4. Change to the directory in which you unzipped the files, (i.e.,
C:\GARMIN), and run the update program, program_card.exe. Select "Card
Programmer" and click "OK" to begin the software upload.

5. Remove the data card from the USB Card Programmer. Make sure that
your GPS unit is powered on and insert the data card into the unit.
Highlight the "Update Software" button and press the ENTER key to begin
uploading the software to the unit. During the upload, the display will
indicate "Software Update Progress". The upload process will take up to
10 minutes to complete. When the upload is completed, the unit will
reset itself and turn on normally.

OK. I've now did everything "manual" using winzip. I even unzipped
"program_card.exe" that is made up of two files. Everything in c:\garmin
just be on the safe side.

BUT no progress. It didn't change anything. Unfortunately.

I'm going crazy. Any other idea ?

Did you try running the program_card.exe file? The directions indicated
you wanted to run that file, not further unzip it.

I think this might be my last guess on this one, I can understand your
frustration.

Maybe it's time for an email to the Garmin support people?
