Default Google Earth versin 4 and Mapsource

After upgrading my Google Earth to version 4, the "View/Show On Google
Earth" function of Mapsource does not work anymo the folders
appears there, but it is empty. Anybody know to bypass this problem,
not including the return to version 3?

I am using the cumbersome process of saving the routes/wpts/trks in GPX
format, open this file in "Gps Trackmaker" software and saving again in
KML format, which I open directly in Goggle Earth. I think that Google
version 4 uses a upgrade version of KML which MapSource does not
reckon.

I actually had the exact same problem and was about to post a message
yesterday, but I was able to get it to work. (I was using the work
around of saving from MapSource to a gpx file and then opening that
file directly from Google Earth. Google Earth comes with a version of
GPSBabel, but you may need to update it to the most current version.)

In my case, I had updated both Google Earth and MapSource recently. I
noticed that MapSource was building the kml file (in a temporary
directory on the PC) before giving an error that Google Earth couldn't
be started. When I tried to open that kml file, Windows prompted me
for what application to associate with that file. So apparently
somewhere along the way, Windows forgot that kml should be associated
with Google Earth.

Anyway, after telling Windows what association to use and to use it for
all files of that type, now the View in Google Earth feature works just
fine again. Hopefully it is a similar problem for you.

Turns out beta build 2416 contains a bug about reading .gpx files.
They know about this. It will supposedly get fixed in the next release.

or you can download GPSBabel 1.3.2 and copy/replace the EXE and DLL file
into the GE program folder.
This worked for me...

The GPSBabel distributed with the new Google Earth needs to be updated.
I did this because the new Google Earth wouldn't open saved GPX files from
MapSource or ExpertGPS.

.. Tami (Masaaki) Takamiya said:

.. side-effects, but at least I could read my GPX files.
..
.. 1. Go to your GE install directory, typically it is
.. C:\Program Files\Google\Google Earth
.. 2. Rename gpsbabel.exe to gpsbabel-1.3.1.exe
.. 3. Download GPSBabel 1.3.2 from
http://www.gpsbabel.org and
.. unzip the downloaded file
.. 4. Copy gpsbabel.exe and libexpat.dll to Google Earth install directory

I had never used Mapsource to open Google Earth. I just saved a GPX file
and opened that in GE. Today, I tried from Mapsource to GE and it worked.

I have Mapsource 6.11.5 2006-09-21, Google Earth 4.0.2416 2006-10-31, and
GPSBabel Version 1.3.2 2006-10-24.

I had read about the bug that could be fixed by updating the GPSBabel
in Google Earth's directory, but that alone did not fix my issues. I
_think_ I remember that before I updated GPSBabel the kml file GE
created wasn't complete (just the structure with no actual data).
After updating GPSBabel the kml file was fine, but MapSource still
wouldn't automatically cause GE to start. Only after fixing the file
association did that start working again. Still no idea how the
association got messed up in the first place though.

Oh well, summary seems to be that you need to update GE's copy of
GPSBabel and make sure your file association is set right in Windows
for KML files.

Frank have you updated MapSource to 6.11.6? It works perfect with
google earth version 3.0.0762. It did not work right with 6.11.5. I did
not try it with newer versions of google earth that are beta versions.

That's doubly interesting.

First, 6.11.6 is marked as November 20, 2006 on the download page, but my
6.11.5 was installed on November 22, and was the latest download available
on the site on that date. My version currently notes that there are no
updates available if I invoke the help-"check for software update".

Second, the 6.11.5 didn't work even prior to the snafu with Google Earth
4.0.2416 2006-10-31?

I never launched Google Earth from Mapsource until this posting came up,
although the latest of the 4.x betas did break the opening of GPX files
that I had exported in the past from various programs.
