You are right, but they are mandated by IEC and ITU to have such an interface. And they are a LOT more expensive....
NASA display does not fall under this legislation....

I can be wrong, but to include in NASA AIS radar serial port to output
NMEA AIS messages it already have procesed, I think could not be so
expensive .... and double the usefull of the unit ...
