Was: NASA Marine AIS Radar
Hi Dave,
Remembering this talk on May, 18 have You had a chance to do the test with your GpsMap276C and the AIS receiver? I was think that, with the release of 3.21 firmware for Map276C, maybe you can get yours to home/office to make the update and so have the oportunity to make the test I have asked. Do not forget this OK? On 17 May 2005 19:42:30 -0700, "Pascal" wrote: I am not shure, but I have the impression that You told that you have a Garmin GpsMap276C too, it is correct? Yes, I do. Remenbering what that unknow guy told, that all the DSC ready garmin gpsploter already have support to AIS, and as You have a NASA or other AIS receiver, could You make a test to see if the Map276C can receives the AIVDM message? Pheraps it has the function to plot the ships position based on the AIVDM message, buried into the DSC function. What You think? I doubt that it will work, and think that DSC is 9600 baud while AIS is 38400 baud, as well as using different protocols, but I may be able to check. My 276C is hard wired into my car at the moment, so I won't be checking for a while, but will try to remember next time I take the unit out for reloading of maps, etc. What "unknown" guys say doesn't usually give me much confidence - being an engineer I usually like to see some specs! :-) Dave |

I may do it now that the new firmware is out, but I think it is still a beta so I'm in no hurry until after I hear a number of good reports or until the real version comes out. OK Dave, thanks, I will wait no problem .... Viva AIS !!!!!

Hi,
if you are interested in testing an AIS receiver, take a look at www.yacht-ais.com. It has a special interface for the NASA AIS Engine. Holger |
Hi Dave,
Any news about the test of 276C with the NASA AIS engine? The 3.30 update for the 276C is out and tested... BTW, my friend who had make before a sucessfull test with his Ham radio, ShipPlotter and laptop in his apartment, bough a NASA AIS engine in his recent trip to England, and made a demo in his boat this week to us, using the laptop and the Sea Clear: very good indeed; he could get many ships from all the "Bahia de Todos os Santos", using the VHF mastehead antenna in his boat wich was docked in his pier of our marina (S12 48.645 W38 27.637) , in the "Bahia de Aratu". Ships was underway in the BTS entrance, and in several ports like (Salvador Port, Usiba port, Aratu port, Madre de Deus port etc). |

I might be going to stay in a seaside hotel next weekend so will probably try to get the 276C upgraded before then for my trip, and also plan to take my AIS receiver if I can get a room on the 10th floor or above to see what sort of reception I get. If I get those 2 operating I'll also try to connect the 2. Dave The email address used for sending these postings is not valid. All replies to the group please. |
My friend, hwo have bough a Nasa AIS Engine send me today an NMEA
message file containing both his Gps and AIS receiver messages, so I could make a simulation using the SeaClear software. I found it very impressive, the software is very very good. I think that if the NASA AIS Radar would have the option to output NMEA messages like the cousin AIS Engine, I probabily would buy it now, since I could use it in stand alone mode or alternatively or simultaneously, use it as an AIS engine too. Why the NASA does not make this? The stand alone unit could be obsolete as soon appears a more sofisticated unit on the market, but having the NMEA output option, it could survive this obsolence for some time, or not? Regards Pascal |
Well, normally people want either have a stand-alone unit or a black-box for use with PC. Or do you carry a (high-end) chartplotter and a mobile PC running vector charts?

Well,
I have a laptop full of Navigation softwares and many charts of all types (raster and vector) but I do not use it all the time for navigation, I use it mainly to plan the routes at the port or navigate in some easy situations (inshore motoring) and where I do not have the corresponding electronic chart in the Gps Plotter and I do not have the necessary paper charts. But do not want to use the laptop on my 36 ft boat when I am sailing at nigth in heavy weather, wich is the situation I probabily would need an AIS ploter. I do not know of any other Chart Ploter wich supprts AIS receiver unless the new Si-Tex units, so I could consider an interim solution with the NASA AIS Radar, IF it have the NMEA output too. I already have 3 Gps Plotters from Garmin, so to buy now a Si-Tex would add a fouth gps/ploter to the boat, wich is not my option. Hi Pascal,
I got your point... but my connections within the AIS world are quite sure that NASA won't release a AIS display with NMEA output, at least not soon. They want to keep both products cheap and adding features that most won't need (see above) will just rise the price.... Cheers, Holger www.yacht-ais.com |
