Default Nile sailing

Does anyone know if it is possible to sail up the Nile (and, of course, back
down again)
I watched a travel show tonight that had heaps of Egyptian sailboats
(dhows?) and wondered if it was possible to do it in a private
"non-Egyptian" capacity.

Just curious as there are lots of other destinations in mind and I hadn't
given that one any thought at all.

Sure, You can sail all the way up to the Aswan Dam..

Irving Johnson did it and there is a video of his life and adventures that
includes his experiences on the Nile.

I believe there is also a book. Do a Google search.

If I were you, I would be content to read the book or watch the video, with
the unsettled conditions and hatered of Westerners.

I travel as an ordinary tourist, by land and air, as far as Luxor in '85.
The tour guides were the only people who were freindly and trust worthy,
even then.

This from Jimmy Cornell http://www.noonsite.com/Countries/Egypt
Occasionally yachts manage to obtain a permit to sail up the River Nile,
a fascinating but not easy way to see Egypt

Hi Hoges,
I was a passenger on a motor yacht from Cairo to just north of Aswan,
about ten years ago. The political scene has changed a lot, since then.
It was a great scenic trip, and yes you do see lots of arab sailboats on
the way. I imagine the winds would be tricky in the narrow confines of
the Nile, but certainly doable. However, in light of the political situation in
Egypt, I would be afraid to risk my life on such a venture.
There are too many crazies over there who would like to target Americans,
and a lone yacht would be a tempting target for them. I think it is even
risky to take a guided tour down the Nile, although there have not been any
attacks on tourists lately. Why tempt fate?

Good point. I'd be a little close to most banks for comfort. Still, it can
go in the "ron" file and I might do it lateron.

Goran Schildt sailed up the Nile in a 38ft ketch in the fifties and wrote a
great book about the trip.
