BTW his schooner, Wanderer, was documented by the WPA project along with a lot of other historic vessels and a set of drawings is available from the National Watercraft Collection. The sail plan was done from photographs and the trained eye can see the forshortening caused by the lens and perspective. Beautiful vessel, a former San Fransisco pilot schooner. Hayden's novel "Voyage" is also a great read. It makes the point that the huge sailing ships at the end of the age of sail were not so much the apex of the sailing ship but the harbinger of the industrial revolution in which people became the fuel for the giant machines of commerce.
