Discomforting a sound seaworthy sailboat with a wave hardly falls into the category of poor seamanship, common attitudes not withstanding. I am *very* careful with my wake in narrow passages and around small low freeboard craft. Not everyone is, but they should be. There is a common problem with overtaking situations which some sailboaters appear totally oblivious to. It happens a lot on the ICW which is none too wide in many places. If a sailboat continues on at close to hull speed while a powerboat is overtaking, there is no choice for the powerboat other than leaving a wake. Most experienced sailors on the ICW recognize this issue and slow down to idle speed allowing the powerboat to reduce speed also. Those who don't get waked by yet another "arrogant ignorant" powerboater. |
