any opinions on the older yamaha 9.9 4 stroke outboards, late 80's early
90's that had the white casings? This is the non high thrust version. Ive been holding out for a newer version of this motor, preferably second hand, but one has come up for sale that looks to be in good condition and well looked after, it also comes with forward controls and a tank for AU$500. brand new this motor retails for around AU$3300, which is why i was hoping to find a second hand one for around 1000~1500 but Ive been holding out quite a while now and i really need an outboard for my boat! This outboard will be used as the main engine on a thunderbird 26. i will have a one year old honda 2hp 4 stroke as a backup, but i really would like to have a reliable outboard there when i need it that will start easily and give me good service. Does this outboard have a generally good reputation? if i buy it and spend a few hundred on servicing does it seem like a good buy? Thanks, Shaun |

: a few hundred on servicing does it seem like a good buy? Drop by the local Yamaha boatshop parts department and check on the availability of a list of mundane, but not popular like impeller, parts. Can you get it a new carb? How about the pull rope rewinder? Can they get a stator for the ignition? As we all know, Japan is a throw away society. Anything 5 years old is disposable so there's no need to keep parts for it. Some Japanese products this is not true. Let's hope this motor is one of them, but let's test it before we buy. They told the guy selling it the stator was no longer available, which is why he's selling it...(c; There aren't any antique Datsuns in the paper where the antique English cars are listed. Thanks, Shaun Corrosion problems were a common problem with these vintages of the Yamaha 9.9. Look at the weep hole on the back of the motor and see how it's doing. I would hold out for a used high thrust too. If you do buy it, flush it well with fresh water and maybe check the thermostat. Evan Gatehouse |

The old English cars are listed because everyone who has them wants to get rid of them. Nah...they're fishing for a source to Lucas parts so they can fix the electrics. As a onetime owner of a really old Jaguar I understand their dilemma. What was that old joke...Something about England as the land of warm beer and Lucas automotive electrical systems... :-) |

If a thunderbird 26 is a power boat, this engine may be suitable for this kind
of planing hull. If you have a sailboat, you want the long shaft high thrust model which will give you the higher gearing for a displacement type hull. I have the 9.9 4 stroke high thrust on my 22 foot sailboat, and it works ok when it is running. I have had carb troubles with the jets continually blocking up. I am installing a 10 micron inline filter next season which will hopefully cure that problem. Otherwise it's fine. Sherwin D.
