Default Cushion foam

Since the group, a few posts ago, is interested in sewing cushions, etc.
What good sources of foam for cushions and mattresses have people found?
What's worked for them in terms of thicknesses, firmness, open or closed
cell?
Thanks for any info !
Ed

Those sites should answer all your questions. If you're going to have
outside covers, consider the open cell foam that will drain and can be
rinsed.

Why would you want the bother of draining water from open cell foam when
closed cell foam can't get water into it in the first place?? Not only will
you get water into open cell foam but over time you will get dirt into there
as well and this is prime territory for odour producing fungi and bacteria.
Maybe you can wash out the dirt and use a dilute bleach solution to
partially disinfect the foam but closed cell foam would avoid all of this.

One reason is that closed cell foam is very hard to find in anything other
than firm or extra firm which may not be appropriate for some cushions.
OTOH, the fast draining open cell stuff may not be the best choice if you
are covering it in a water resistant fabric like Sunbrella.

Yes, that's a point I had not considered. A friend has cockpit cushions
which I believe are closed cell foam and I have found them to be rather
firm.

I just found a good source for almost anything you want to know about Poly
foam. http://www.pfa.org/intouch/index.html Is the index to the
Polyurethane Foam Association newsletter. Lots of good info on density,
weights, uses and fabrication.
